Hours of work: Part time, 18.75 hours per week

Position Summary: The Clinical Course Coordinator is a key member of the Nursing Management Team within the Oncology and Haematology Service. The role of Clinical Course Coordinator centres on the identification, support and provision of learning opportunities in clinical nursing practice. The post holder is primarily responsible for the effective implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of the Postgraduate Diploma Oncology/Haematology in Beaumont Hospital, in liaison with the Senior Education Coordinator and in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. The Course Coordinator will work closely with the Senior Education Coordinator, Clinical Nurse Managers and the Practice Support Nurse, and the other Education / Course Coordinators to facilitate nurses in the speciality to develop professional clinical competencies. The successful candidate must have a keen interest in postgraduate nurse education, experience of caring for patients in the coronary care unit, and a high level of interpersonal communication / people management skills necessary to execute the role effectively.
Responsibilities
* The Education Co-Ordinator will: Develop and maintain a learning environment in all clinical areas of the Oncology/Haematology Service.
* Be responsible for the effective implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of the Specialist Practice Course in Oncology/Haematology nursing undertaken at Beaumont Hospital.
* Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Managers, Practice Support Nurses and Directorate Nurse Manager to ensure continuity in formal education programmes, in-service education, continuing professional development and ward-based initiatives.
* Facilitate individual nurses to develop professional clinical competencies and ensure staff comply with continuous professional development.
* Support students during rotation placements and help students reach clinical competencies; spend time weekly in the clinical setting to stay current with practices.
* Enhance nurse research in the unit and assist staff in progressing their work to a published level.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Programme Development & Co-ordination Maintain communication between Beaumont Hospital School of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Managers and Academic Partners regarding formal education programmes; plan schedules, negotiate lectures, organise clinical placements, plan assessments and examinations.
* Participate in interview/selection for Specialist Practice Programmes and postgraduate programmes.
* Support student development in accordance with programme aims and objectives; provide supervision when necessary.
* Contribute to curriculum planning and development of specialist clinical modules; formulate standards of education and act as examiner/assessor as required.
* Undertake moderator role for assessments; participate in Education meetings and Progression Board Meetings.
* Prepare graduate diploma programme documentation and maintain records of student course work.
* Maintain a culture of organisational learning; ensure projects are implemented into practice.
* Work with other education coordinators in overall development of education and in-service programmes.
Teaching & Staff Development
* Lecture and teach on Specialist Modules; facilitate academic writing and course assignment development.
* Assist students in identifying learning needs and support learning in the clinical setting.
* Collaborate with clinical practice support nurses to support student learning and provide feedback.
* Support staff development; identify training needs; promote autonomous and expert nursing practice.
* Organise study days and ensure mandatory training is up to date.
* Encourage problem-based learning and identify teaching opportunities in the clinical setting.
Standards and Quality of Care
* Maintain a suitable environment for patients and staff with emphasis on Health and Safety; coordinate infection control, occupational health, fire safety and equipment provision.
* Review and update policies and procedures; ensure staff understand and apply them; be familiar with the Major Incident Plan.
Research & Audit
* Keep up to date with best practice; facilitate nursing and multidisciplinary research.
* Guide and support students in practice and research; enable critical analysis and use of research in practice.
* Develop a portfolio of research projects with clinical nurse managers; organise study days for staff; participate in policy and protocol development.
* Initiate and conduct nursing and MDT audit and research; disseminate current research to inform practice.
Practice
* Keep up to date with best practice; include a day per week in clinical areas; provide direct patient care and demonstrate specialist skills.
* Plan and organise student learning in the clinical setting; participate in quality improvements.
* Develop programmes tailored to the nursing workforce needs in Oncology/Haematology in collaboration with the Directorate Nurse Manager.
Programme Evaluation
* Evaluate specialist module content and recommend modifications; provide ongoing evaluation of teaching, learning and assessment processes.
* Evaluate the programme context, lecture content and student experience; recommend required modifications.
Self Development
* Foster evidence-based teaching, learning and practice; act as role model, mentor and leader.
* Attend staff development programmes; keep up to date with research and journals; discuss performance needs with the DNM.
Administrative
* Assist in collecting and collating statistical and clinical data; support annual departmental reporting.
* Assist in unit budgeting/management; ensure accurate electronic records and reports.
Qualifications
Selection Criteria: Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.
* Mandatory:
* 1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc (a) Eligible applicants on the closing date must be registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives (NMBI) or entitled to be so registered; (b) at least 5 years post-registration experience (or an aggregate of 5 years full-time post-registration) with 2 years in the specialty; (c) have the capacity to discharge the functions of the role; (d) evidence of CPD; (e) Level 9 qualification and postgraduate course in Oncology/Haematology.
* 2. Annual registration Maintain live annual registration with NMBI; PSAC compliance.
* 3. Health Be fully competent and capable of undertaking duties and in good health.
* 4. Character Be of good character.
* Desirable:
* A Registered Nurse Tutor qualification is desirable. A management course is desirable.
