Clinical Specialist Radiographer CT Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital Job type: Permanent Overview of role: The purpose of this post is to provide a quality patient focused radiographic service to all patients attending UPMC Whitfield Hospital in line with professional best practice and hospital guidelines, policies and procedures.
The post holder will be responsible for providing excellent patient care and treatment in a planned and coordinated manner as part of the Radiology and wider Multi-Disciplinary Team.
They will ensure the provision of a high-quality service in accordance with professional standards of practice.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Duties and Responsibilities: MRI To carry out appropriate MRI scanning, as requested by clinicians, whilst using relevant clinical information to modify routine procedures when required.
Triage, organise, plan and protocol individual MRI referrals for scanning from Clinicians prioritising according to Clinical need from the clinical information given.
Advising Clinicians, GPs and other Healthcare professionals of alternative appropriate examinations when required.
To allocate MRI appointment slots Ensuring the correct preparation for the investigation is given to the patient.
Explain to patients, relatives, carers, medical personnel and other members of the multidisciplinary team the nature of highly complex scanning procedures, any contraindications and complications.
To evaluate MRI Safety Questionnaire to maintain the safety of both the patient an / or escorts.
Request & undertake X-rays of any areas of the body, in conjunction with Radiologist, that may have foreign objects contraindicating a scan.
Evaluate the resultant X-rays before making the decision to proceed or not with the scan.
Evaluate scans using knowledge of pathology to decide if further sequences are required and/or the need for contrast media.
Prescribe, dispense and administer intravenous contrast media (after consultation with Radiologist).
Explain to the patient the need for the injection; assess the patient's suitability by checking for any contraindications or allergies.
Then administer the I.V.
injection only when informed patient consent has been obtained.
Monitor patient conditions to ensure any adverse reactions are recognised and dealt with promptly and appropriately.
Research and review protocols using evidence based practice and liaise with Radiologist.
To undertake and participate in Clinical Audit.
Monitor and ensure stock levels are maintained.
To maintain accurate equipment records, supervise and advise on the maintenance and repair of equipment assessing urgency of repair and re-arranging workload accordingly.
Use constant vigilance regarding The MRI Scanner Room and 'Controlled Area' whilst ensuring only appropriate staff/patients are allowed into these areas.
Liaise with the relevant team members in the provision of efficient and timely x-ray services Participate in the provision of radiography services in a professional manner thereby upholding the reputation of the department and the hospital.
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the provision of an integrated patient-centred service.
Assist in planning, organising and coordinating all aspects of the service.
Delegate professional duties as may be necessary for an efficient service.
Adhere to all departmental imaging protocols; be responsible for the correct identification of patient images.
Adhere to professional guidelines as determined by the Irish Institute of Radiographers and Radiation Therapists.
Contribute to the development and implementation of agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice.
Access all documents, policies and procedures and report incidents and complaints through our hospital quality management system Q-Pulse.
Take part in routine inspection of equipment and quality assurance procedures.
Be responsible for the cleaning and care of all imaging equipment.
Be responsible for the safe use of all imaging equipment and adhering to instructions on its ensure other staff complies with same.
Be responsible for the logging of and reporting of all equipment faults to the Radiology Manager or his / her designate.
Maximise the use of new technology including Radiology Information System and PACS.
Co-ordination of Patient Care: To participate in the provision of on-call and weekend radiology services for the hospital.
To liaise with all staff and assist and rotate to other areas when required.
Contribute and support the quality and patient safety agenda in particular the implementation of NICE protocols and the promotion of evidenced based practice.
Demonstrates sound understanding of change management principles.
To fully participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team: participate in team meetings/case conferences.
Communicate to other team members the relevant patient information to ensure that treatment is as seamless and as continuous as possible.
Educational Responsibilities: Participate in mandatory training programmes.
Participate in continuing professional development including in-service training, attending and presenting at conferences / courses relevant to practice, promoting and contributing to research etc.
as agreed with the Radiology Manager or designated officer.
Engage in department profession development plan with his / her line manager.
Provide peer support when necessary.
Actively participate in induction / teaching / training / supervision of radiographers and other staff within the department.
Identify teaching / learning / audit / opportunities within the department for themselves / others.
Organisation and Development: To keep abreast of changes and developments in the practice of radiography and to ensure that best evidence practice is pursued.
Participate and implement skills learned in the Manual Handling Training Program.
Be actively involved in quality initiatives on a hospital wide basis.
Maintain, develop and enlarge own professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes to respond to a rapidly changing healthcare environment and service.
Participate in continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
Audit and Research: Initiates, participates in and evaluates audit.
To ensure clinical radiology activities are evidence based.
To initiate and participate in projects with other health care professionals with a view to improving the care delivered.
Personnel Follow uniform policy reference General Through the course of the working day or week there maybe a requirement to work in other areas of the hospital in line with patient requirements as requested by your line manager/deputy or nurse management.
Staff must produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed by them, if required to do so by the organisation.

Information Governance In the course of your employment you may have access to, or hear information concerning the medical or personal affairs of patients and / or staff.
Such records and information are strictly confidential, unless acting on the instructions of an authorised officer, on no account must information concerning staff or patients be divulged or discussed except in the performance of normal duty.
In addition records must never be left in such a manner that unauthorised persons can obtain access to them and must be kept in safe custody when no longer required.
Qualifications & Experience: BSc Diagnostic Radiography.
Possess a recognised postgraduate course (NFQ Level 9) or equivalent and have no less than 2 years practical clinical experience working in MRI.
Qualification must be recognised and registered on the Radiography Division of the Radiographers Register maintained by CORU.
Experience: Have 6 years fulltime (or an aggregate of 6 years) post qualification clinical experience.
Experience in a hospital environment is essential.
Up to date BLS Certification.
Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge: Knowledge of RIS, PACS, Medi-web, CR and DR systems and associated technology.
A proficiency in other computing and digital technology areas.
