Overview of the Department
Student Support & Development (SS&D) provides personal and professional development support to students at DCU. It is a busy and diverse unit, which includes the Student Health Centre, the Student Advice and Learning Service, Counselling & Personal Development, the Disability & Learning Support Office, the Careers Service, the Access Service and the Inter Faith Centre. Role Profile
SS&D is currently seeking a committed, flexible and dedicated individual to work in a nursing role in the DCU Student Health Services on campus. The individual will primarily be located on the DCU St Patrick's campus, in Drumcondra, but may be required to work on the Glasnevin site where required. They will report into the Head of the Student Health Centre. The Dean of Students has ultimate responsibility for all services within the Unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Clinical Duties
* Triage students as they enter the Health Centre and refer to the GP, where relevant and necessary.
* Assist the GP with medical procedures, which need to be carried out in the course of their duties.
* Provide nursing treatments to students, both independently and in cooperation with the GP such as vaccines, ear syringing, dressings, phlebotomy.
* Refer students to relevant internal/external services when required.
* Take full responsibility for the medical care of the student when the GP is not present.
* Run STI clinics and other relevant clinics at intervals for the student population.
* Ensure that a confidential service is provided at all times.
* Liaise with and refer students to other support services within Student Support and Development, as required.
* Provide emergency interventions for members of staff or members of the public, who may need medical assistance from time to time.
Health Education
* Promote healthy lifestyle choices for students, particularly the benefits of a healthy diet and regular sleep.
* Liaise with the DCU Health Promotion Officer and also external health-related associations, such as the Health Promotion Unit and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre to promote health strategies on campus, reflecting current health Issues.
* Coordinate awareness campaigns relating to epidemic and notifiable diseases.
* Have a good awareness of family planning advice and emergency contraceptive advice.
* Advise students regarding their healthcare entitlements under current legislation.
* Work with the Students' Union to promote health awareness on campus.
Administrative Duties
* Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are made on the medical records system (Socrates).
* Liaise with the Head of Service in the DCU Student Health Centre and provide reports on the activities of the Health Centre, as requested.
* Liaise and work with the Health & Safety Officer/Security Staff in the event of an emergency on campus.
* Provide clear instruction for the administrative member of staff in the area.
* Provide up-to- date and accurate information, under direction from the Head of Service, on local medical facilities and services, including local chemists and community-based Mental Health services.
* Triage emails and arrange appointments as required.
Qualifications and Experience
* Candidates must have a Primary Degree or equivalent (NFQ Level 7) in Nursing.
* Candidates must be registered with an Bord Altranais and have at least 3 years’ post registration experience as a practice nurse/occupational health nurse/student health nurse.
* Strong ability to work independently and autonomously, as well as part of a team.
* Possession of excellent clinical decision-making skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong organisational skills, excellent attention to detail and IT skills.
* Demonstrated willingness and ability to work with colleagues outside of the immediate Health Centre for health promotion and enhancement.
* Have at least 3 years' experience of triage in a practice setting.
* Experience with administering vaccinations, triaging for GP, STI testing and providing STI advice, ear syringing and phlebotomy.
* Experience providing contraceptive advice.
* Thorough knowledge of mental health supports and services for young people and experience with patients with mental health challenges.
* Have a track record of outreach activity amongst the student population, with clear evidence of impact.
* Experience working at third level in a nursing capacity.
* Experience with the Socrates Medical Records System would be an advantage.
* Recent experience of telephone triage and the nuances of same.
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training:

Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Professional 5 - €57,495 - €69,270 (refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale for the role.)
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Please note this role does not meet criteria for a Critical Skills permit as stipulated by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment.
Remote Working Policy
From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
