Senior Sustainability Engineer, Data Center Engineering Sustainability
Job ID: 10385122 | Amazon Data Services Ireland Limited
As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure. This role drives carbon reduction in the design of our data centers across the expanding EMEA portfolio. You will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team and the Global Design Engineering team to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers. You will create mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and track their success. Our standard data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate, and the building materials, structures, and equipment are adapted to the local environment, available materials, construction techniques, and competencies in that market. This provides the potential for specific carbon reduction opportunities on a building‑by‑building basis.
Key Responsibilities
Understand the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally.
Create and modify existing mechanisms to track carbon throughout the project life‑cycle.
Own the tracking of carbon for projects within your region, including working directly with our construction team and equipment suppliers to identify opportunities for carbon reduction.
Identify project/region specific opportunities to reduce carbon on specific builds.
Propose and develop carbon reduction initiatives to implement globally across the AWS fleet.
Own sustainability certifications for builds in your region as mandated by building permit requirements or AWS policies.
Support our public policy teams in engaging with local authorities on sustainability issues.
Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, and reports.
Initiate and drive sustainability initiatives for future data center designs.
Offer creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions.
Day in the Life
As a Senior Sustainability Engineer you will collaborate with internal groups including Design Engineering, Construction, Equipment procurement, Contractor procurement, and AWS Sustainability, as well as external groups such as material producers, equipment manufacturers, General Contractors, consultants, regulators, and industry consortia. Projects will be throughout the EMEA region; up to 25% travel will be required.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance.
Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities, including but not limited to data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
Knowledge of carbon technologies, such as Direct Air Capture and Material Decarbonization.
Master’s Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Policy or a related field.
