Customer Service Engineer – PerkinElmer

Join us as a Customer Service Engineer at PerkinElmer. The position is based on our client site in Waterford, Monday – Friday. Preference will be given to candidates with certification in analytical instrumentation; however, we also welcome training candidates who have experience with HPLC systems.


Job Description

* Assess instrument performance trends and take proactive measures to avoid downtime.
* Apply Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies to streamline laboratory workflows and maintenance schedules.
* Recommend system upgrades, spare parts management, and new technology adoption to enhance laboratory efficiency.

Act as a technical lead for the engineering team, ramping up team members and ensuring high‑quality service delivery.


Responsibilities

* Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with R&D, Quality Assurance, and Manufacturing teams.
* Train laboratory staff on equipment maintenance, GMP compliance, and troubleshooting procedures.
* Provide clear written and verbal communication for internal and external partners, including regulatory audits.
* Perform routine maintenance, repairs, installation, and validation of instrumentation and accessories.
* Deliver onsite user training on defined product groups.
* Maintain accurate documentation including circuit diagrams, service bulletins, and user manuals, updating revisions as required.
* Ensure tools and test equipment are adequate for service; keep calibration records current.
* Submit service reports, time sheets, expense claims, and vehicle logs on a weekly basis.


Education and Experience

* Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, or related field.
* Minimum 8 years of hands‑on experience with High‑Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.
* Deep understanding of chromatographic techniques (HPLC, UHPLC, etc.).
* Experience servicing common HPLC manufacturers.


Technical Skills

* Expertise in preventive maintenance of HPLC systems (pumps, detectors, columns, injectors).
* Experience with validation and verification activities, including IQ, OQ, and PQ.
* Proficiency with chromatography software such as Empower.
* Ability to optimize chromatographic methods and troubleshoot issues involving peak resolution and pressure fluctuations.
* Knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and industry standards.


GMP Training and Compliance

* GMP certification or extensive training in GMP compliant environments.
* Understanding of FDA, USP, and ICH regulatory guidelines for HPLC method development and equipment maintenance.


Validation and Documentation

* Develop, execute, and review validation protocols for analytical instruments.
* Write, review, and approve SOPs, calibration records, maintenance logs, and validation reports.
* Prepare documentation for audits, ensuring compliance with instrument qualification and data integrity principles.


Analytical Expertise

* Strong analytical skills for troubleshooting HPLC systems and identifying root causes of failures.
* Implement preventative maintenance programs to improve reliability.


Audit Readiness

* Support internal and external audits focusing on instrument qualification, calibration, and maintenance records.
* Apply data integrity principles in accordance with 21 CFR Part 11.


Safety and Compliance

* Follow laboratory safety protocols and chemical handling guidelines.
* Maintain a safe working environment in line with company and regulatory standards.


Preferred Qualifications

* Certification in analytical instrumentation from vendors such as Agilent or Waters.
* Experience with Waters Alliance, Agilent 1260/1290, or other major HPLC manufacturers.


Working Conditions

* Work in a laboratory environment, including occasional overtime to address urgent maintenance needs.
* Ability to stand for extended periods, lift equipment components, and perform physical maintenance tasks.
