Position Summary
The Diabetic CNS (inpatient) is a pivotal role providing expert care to inpatients with Type 1 & 2 Diabetes across all directorates in Beaumont Hospital.
The CNS is responsible for managing the hospitals link nurse programme which provides ongoing education and support to staff in all areas of the hospital.
The CNS works in collaboration with colleagues in the Diabetic Day Centre and closely with the Consultant Diabetologists.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Focus
– The Diabetes Nurse Specialist will help meet the psychological, emotional and informational needs of patients from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.
The support is provided in the following areas:
Diabetes Day Centre
Throughout the hospital
Outpatient department
Activities include: active participation in planning and carrying care in the Diabetes Day Centre, providing support to family/significant others through listening, problem solving and education, outreach support for the patient at home, attending Diabetic Outpatient Clinic and coordinating visits, assessing patients for referral to specialist services, reporting promptly to consultant/clinical leader, coordinating relevant services for treatment, attending multidisciplinary team meetings, educating patients on diagnoses and treatments, fostering good working relationships, maintaining accurate clinical records, demonstrating specialist knowledge and clinical expertise, ensuring hospital policies and procedures are observed, participating in policy and guidelines development, and demonstrating leadership and communication skills.
Patient Advocate
– Provide an efficient, effective, high-quality service respecting patient needs; act as resource/contact person for patients with diabetes; provide contact details for out-of-hours support; be aware of existing resources for patients and families; advocate for patients in clinical trials; participate in treatment discussions; facilitate development of information leaflets.
Education and Training
– Provide support to nursing staff through regular group meetings; assist in development and delivery of training programmes; teach all grades of nursing staff and other disciplines; use educational opportunities to maintain high standards of care.
Audit and Research
– Ensure personal practice is compliant and up-to-date with best practice; participate in regular audits; maintain a quality assurance programme; use research findings to influence care; set objectives and develop policies; identify areas for research; promote awareness of research-based practice; participate in departmental research.
Consultancy
– Provide leadership in clinical practice; generate and contribute to development of clinical standards and guidelines; establish collegial partnerships; support primary care team; develop collaborative working relationships; support implementation of national clinical care programmes; use specialist knowledge to support general nursing practice.
Other specific work not covered in this job description may also be assigned by the Director of Nursing or Consultant as required.
Qualifications
Selection Criteria
Mandatory
Registered nurse on the active register of NMBI in the General Division.
Acquired a Level 8 post-registration Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) / National Framework of Qualifications (NQF) major academic award relevant to diabetes care prior to application.
Extensive experience and clinical expertise – minimum of five years post-registration experience.
Minimum of two years' experience in the specialist area of diabetic care.
Ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice.
Evidence of continuing professional development.
Management course (desirable).
Capability to discharge the post with requisite knowledge and management ability.
