Overview
Murphy is recruiting for a Design Manager to work with our Energy and Industry team in Newbridge.
Responsibilities
Lead the design management and coordination of structural steel packages across building and infrastructure projects, from early engagement through detailed design and into fabrication and construction.
Lead Design Management activities at tender, Early Contractor Involvement, and pre‑construction stages, ensuring appropriate resourcing and clear scope definition across design phases.
Coordinate multiple interfaces including internal steel designers, external consulting engineers, connection designers, temporary works designers, fabricators, and site teams.
Act as the Design Lead for structural steel on assigned projects, ensuring design information is suitably managed, coordinated, and issued in line with programme requirements.
Proactively identify, manage, and remove design blockers, ambiguities, and missing information through formal queries, coordination meetings, and escalation where required.
Review structural steel design submissions for technical compliance, quality, completeness, and suitability for fabrication and erection, without undertaking detailed design calculations.
Monitor and drive the engineering design programme, prioritising design deliverables that unlock fabrication, procurement, and site activities.
Liaise closely with Project Managers, Commercial teams, and Fabrication teams to ensure design aligns with construction sequencing, workshop capacity, and delivery priorities.
Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers to ensure constructability, erection methodology, and interface with permanent works are fully considered.
Manage compliance with applicable standards, specifications, and client requirements, ensuring consistent application across all structural steel design packages.
Support continual improvement of structural steel design management processes, trackers, and coordination practices within the business.
Qualifications
Relevant engineering or construction‑related qualification is preferred, supported by a practical, delivery focused mindset aligned with Murphy’s values.
Proven experience managing structural steel design packages within a contractor or design and build environment.
Strong understanding of structural steel design principles, fabrication processes, and erection methodologies, without the requirement to act as a practising design engineer.
Demonstrated experience coordinating internal and external designers, consultants, and specialist subcontractors.
Strong programme awareness with the ability to drive design progress, prioritise deliverables, and maintain momentum across multiple projects.
Highly responsive and organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and unblock issues quickly and effectively.
