Staff Nurse Pre-Assessment, FTC- UPMC Whitfield Hospital Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital Job type: Fixed Term Overview of role: We are currently recruiting for Staff Nurse Pre-Assessment on 9 month fixed term contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford. To provide and coordinate exceptional patient care in Pre-Operative testing and assessment clinic for UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The nurse will work as an integral member of the nursing and multidisciplinary team involved in the provision of evidence-based care to the patients who attend. The role involves working in a clinical setting, interacting with patients. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse is responsible for ensuring that patients are medically fit and adequately prepared for their surgery. This role involves conducting comprehensive pre-operative assessments, identifying and managing risks, providing patient education, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities: Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments including medical history review, physical examinations, and necessary investigations. Identify and mange ore-existing medical conditions that may impact surgical outcomes. Coordinate and facilitate necessary pre-operative tests such as blood work,, ECG's ,MRSA screening and imaging. Recognise and escalate any potential risks to the appropriate consultant or consultant anaesthetist, Optimise patients for surgery by ensuring they are fit and adequately prepared. Provide patient education regarding their upcoming procedure, anaesthesia, fasting guidelines, and medication adjustments. Address patient concerns, answer questions, and provide reassurance. Will work within the current nursing practice in accordance with NMBI guidelines, Work collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate seamless patient care. Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate and up to date medical records ensuring all pre-assessment documentation is completed. Ensure all test results are reviewed and communicated properly. Schedule follow up assessments. Participate in quality improvement initiatives in the department. Ensure adherence to hospital policies, national guidelines and best practices in pre operative assessment. Ability to multi-task with telephone communication and medical record charting. Strong empathy when dealing with patients and family undergoing surgical interventions. Maintain a safe environment within the department for both staff and patients. Qualifications & Experience: Be registered in the general division of the register of nurses kept by NMBI. Experience in Phlebotomy Experience in ECG recording desirable Strong clinical assessment skills, and the ability to identify and manage risk factors. Excellent Communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with patients and the multidisciplinary team. Proficiency in using computers and patient management system, and Microsoft teams. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
