Overview of the Role
The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) I is a key member of the point-of-care team and leads the clinical management of the Theatre Scrub Nursing team ward.
The Theatre complex consists of five theatres, three general and a minor ops room, and a recovery room.
In theatre we specialise in a range of surgical procedures such as dental, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology, and general surgery.
The CNM I is pivotal in upholding the UPMC values in the clinical setting, ensuring accessible, world-class care that puts patients first.
The post holder will work in collaboration with the CNM II's in theatre and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that admission, transfer, and discharge processes are efficient and nurse-led.
This is a full-time permanent position for an enthusiastic and motivated individual.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the theatre CNM II group with patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using evidence-based care planning.
Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership to the point-of-care staff.
Coordinate, assess, plan, deliver, and review patient-care services in the designated area.
Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) guidelines.
Collaborate with patients, families, carers and staff in treatment and care.
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care and supervise the activities of other qualified nurses.
Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital's quality systems to ensure high standards.
Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers.
Work as part of an effective multidisciplinary team, promoting teamwork and excellent patient care.
Further develop the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department.
Ensure all staff are familiar with the use, maintenance, and safety of equipment.
Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
Coordinate with pharmacy stock management for theatre supplies.
Quality
Participate in and encourage evidence-based practice.
Assist in unit audits and data collection.
Monitor incident occurrence and follow up with the theatre CNM II group.
Coordinate with the CSSD team regarding instrumentation for theatre lists.
Managerial Responsibilities
Provide supervision, coordination, and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimal delivery of care.
Assist theatre CNM II group in maintaining bed management and patient flow.
Serve as senior clinical point of call within the multidisciplinary team.
Maintain accreditation standards and coordinate accreditation tasks within the ward.
Assist in workforce planning, including roster management.
Manage resources efficiently and effectively.
Lead practice development within the clinical area.
Support the CNM II in leading and implementing changes using lean methodology.
Contribute to the formulation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
Act as a deputy for the CNM II during absences.
Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Facilitate nurse orientation and assessment of patient care within the ward.
Ensure consumables for theatre lists are available and problem-free.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered or eligible for registration in the General Division of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
Minimum of five years' experience as a staff nurse in a theatre setting.
At least one year of management experience in a theatre setting is desirable.
Completion of a recognised post-registration course in peri-operative care is desirable.
Evidence of continuing professional development.
Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
Active role in continuous improvement programmes using lean tools and methodology.
Support for theatre department accreditation compliance (HIQA / CHKS / JCI).
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
