Overview

Postdoctoral Researcher in pyramidal site-controlled quantum dots grown in small (less than 2 microns) recesses. Contract: Full Time/ Specified Purpose. Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for a Postdoctoral opportunity. The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures (EPN) group, Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork fund a Postdoc position on “on pyramidal site-controlled quantum dots grown in small (less than 2 microns) recesses”.

The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures group is a well-established research team in Ireland addressing epitaxial growth of devices and quantum structures. This project is funded by an EU Pathfinder award (QCEED) and focuses on the development of novel semiconductor cavities capable of enhancing photon extraction and photon quality for coupled site-controlled quantum dots in engineered small lithographic recesses. Pyramidal quantum dots are a unique system with challenges for developing cavity designs. We seek researchers with a strong background in single and coupled quantum dots, and experience on the epitaxy of site-controlled dots by MOVPE and their characterization.

Key Responsibilities

* The main focus of this position is the development and optical analysis/characterization of III-V and dielectric photonic cavities centered around single and coupled pyramidal quantum dots.
* Collaborate with the rest of the EPN group on photonic chips, III-V material development and cryogenic optical characterization.
* Engage broadly in PhD mentoring when possible.
* Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with required Health and Safety standards.
* Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

The Postdoc level position is open to candidates of EU and non-EU nationalities. The appointment is for two years with the possibility of further career development as specified by Tyndall career development opportunities. The institute welcomes applications from candidates with entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including creation of technology start-ups.

Essential Criteria

* Postdoctoral applicants must hold a viva/PhD in Physics/Photonic Engineering or a related discipline before the start of the contract.
* Experience in MOVPE of site-controlled quantum dots.
* Strong CV with experience in quantum optics and photonics.

Desirable Criteria

* Highly self-motivated applicants with a strong experimental attitude.

Appointment may be made on the Irish Universities Association (IUA) Scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers (€46,306 – €52,863 per annum). Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.

Informal enquiries concerning this position can be made to Dr. Emanuele Pelucchi (no email link). Closing date of applications is 1pm, 14th November 2025.

Application Instructions

Please attach an up-to-date CV/Resume AND a brief motivation letter outlining how you meet the Essential Criteria for this role.

Please note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.

The University, at its discretion, may make an additional appointment(s) following the conclusion of the process. Appointment to posts advertised will be dependent on University approval and the terms of the employment control framework for the higher education sector. Tyndall National Institute does not require the assistance of recruitment agencies. Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
