Purpose of the Post
The CNS post holder will deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) ****.
Patient Caseload
Haematology/ Oncology/Radiotherapy patients over 16 years of age
Concepts: Clinical Focus, Service user/client Advocacy, Education and Training, Audit and Research, Consultancy (including leadership in clinical practice)
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (Acute Haematology Oncology) will provide a non-ED direct access route for Haematology/Oncology/Radiotherapy patients and act as a point of contact for patients in the out-patient setting, providing telephone triage using UKONS, detailed patient assessments and unscheduled reviews in the oncology/haematology day units.
They will work within the acute haematology and oncology service as part of the multidisciplinary team, forging relationships especially with ED, acute medical assessment units and community services, and continue to develop the role in line with evidence-based practice and NCCP guidance.
Responsibilities
Clinical Focus
Direct and indirect care, including assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care to patients, families and MDT.
Provide specialist nursing service for cancer patients through continuum of care.
Undertake comprehensive physical, psychological and social assessments using evidence based practice.
Use assessment outcomes to develop and implement care plans with MDT and service user.
Monitor and evaluate response to treatment, amend plans accordingly.
Coordinate investigations, treatment therapies and follow-ups.
Provide telephone triage and unscheduled reviews in day ward.
Educate patients and families on disease and treatment side-effects.
Patient Advocacy
Communicate, negotiate and represent patient values and decisions to MDT; facilitate access to care and support primary/secondary services.
Maintain patient confidentiality, privacy and dignity.
Develop advocacy procedures and challenge substandard interactions.
Supply contact details and SOS hotline information.
Promote patient issues within hospital and community forums.
Collect patient feedback to evaluate service.
Education & Training
Maintain clinical competence, develop educational programmes, mentorship, CPD, and research opportunities.
Update knowledge of service user conditions and therapies.
Provide information and interventions to enhance patient autonomy.
Design and implement training for staff and patients.
Participate in MDT learning activities.
Maintain CPD records and utilize protected time for learning.
Audit & Research
Establish and maintain a service user register, collect KPI data, conduct audits and research, disseminate findings and influence practice.
Align data with national KPIs.
Identify and conduct audits and research.
Provide evidence for practice improvement.
Support service planning and budgeting with audit data.
Consultancy & Leadership
Act as a role model, develop clinical standards, engage with stakeholders, provide leadership in clinical practice and support professional development.
Contribute to guideline development and implementation.
Lead on clinical practice improvement and quality initiatives.
Collaborate with national and regional stakeholders.
Mentor students and staff.
Health & Safety / Quality, Risk and Safety

Qualifications
Mandatory requirements
Registered nurse/midwife on active register of Nurses and Midwives.
Minimum 1 year full-time experience in acute haematology/oncology care.
Completed post-registration programme or equivalent level 9 or higher award.
Continuing professional development (CPD) evidence.
Ability to practice safely within scope of practice.
Annual registration
Maintain live annual registration and submit PSAC to HSE.
Health & Character
Demonstrate good health and good character.
Post Specific Requirements
Depth and breadth of specialist nursing experience.
Certificate in Nurse Prescribing of Medicinal Products and Ionising Radiation.
Apply for entry into Interim ONMSD CNS/CMS database.
