A Day in the Life Of:
The User Experience (UX) Director will lead the user experience vision for CRDN’s growing digital product portfolio while building and scaling a high‑performing UX organization inclusive of UX designers and UX researchers. This role is accountable for establishing foundational UX practices across the organization, defining how UX integrates into CRDN’s product development lifecycle, and ensuring consistent, high‑quality delivery across both insourced and coordinated outsourced work. You will engage deeply with clinicians, product leads, marketing, engineering, and system architects to design experiences that are intuitive, clinically meaningful, and aligned with CRDN’s regulatory and quality frameworks. You will also define UX strategy, operating model, staffing plan, and budget while supporting the incorporation of emerging digital and AI‑enabled capabilities in a safe, compliant, and purposeful way.
Responsibilities
Own and evolve the UX vision and strategy for CRDN’s digital product portfolio, ensuring alignment with business priorities, clinical outcomes, and regulatory expectations
Build, lead, and mentor a scalable UX organization including UX designers and UX researchers
Define team structure, roles, hiring plans, and onboarding approaches to support current and future product needs
Establish and manage the UX operating budget, including internal staffing and external vendor/agency spend
Manage and coordinate outsourced UX partners, ensuring quality, consistency, and integration with internal teams
Set clear expectations, goals, and success metrics for UX delivery and maturity
User–Centered Design & Research
Engage in clinical observations and interviews to understand real‑world workflows, tasks, and constraints
Ensure workflow‑oriented UX design across CRDN digital products, translating clinical insights, stakeholder inputs, and system constraints into interaction models and end‑to‑end product experiences
Oversee and contribute to the creation of workflow diagrams, user journeys, wireframes, prototypes, and design specifications that clearly communicate intended behaviors and support high‑quality implementation
Ensure usability research and validation activities are planned, executed, and documented appropriately across product lifecycles
Cross‑Functional Partnership
Partner closely with digital product leads, engineering, marketing, clinical teams, and system architecture to shape product direction, align priorities, and deliver successful products
Serve as a senior UX voice in product planning, roadmap discussions, and design trade‑off decisions
Facilitate collaborative design sessions, workflow reviews, and design critiques with cross‑functional partners
Process, Standards & Governance
Establish UX processes, documentation standards, and experience guidelines that support consistency across CRDN’s digital ecosystem
Define how UX integrates into CRDN’s product development processes, including agile and dual‑track delivery models
Oversee the development and evolution of design systems and shared UX assets
Incorporate modern AI‑assisted design and prototyping techniques to accelerate concept exploration and iteration—while ensuring outputs remain clinically safe, clear, and aligned with regulatory expectations
Ensure usability testing is designed, executed, and reported at appropriate stages of development, from early concepts through summative validation, in alignment with Medtronic’s quality and regulatory policies
Mentor teams on UX methods, workflow mapping, and effective design practices to elevate UX maturity across CRDN
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Engineering, UX/HCI, or related field
Extensive experience in MedTech or a regulated environment, including familiarity with complex workflows, usability engineering expectations, and associated documentation
10+ years of experience designing complex digital product experiences involving workflows, interaction design, and system‑level considerations (8+ years with Master’s degree)
7+ years of managerial experience
Proven experience leading and scaling a UX organization, including hiring, mentoring, and managing designers and researchers
Demonstrated ability to manage UX delivery across both internal teams and external partners
Strong collaboration experience within agile or dual‑track product teams, working closely with clinical, engineering, and product leadership
Excellent communication skills with the ability to clarify design trade‑offs, resolve conflicting inputs, and drive alignment at senior levels
Proficiency with modern UX, research, and prototyping tools
Experience building or governing a design system or enterprise‑level UX standards
Nice to Have
Experience designing clinician‑facing software or workflow‑heavy applications
Experience supporting platforms of connected devices, cloud‑based ecosystems, or data‑rich clinical applications
Familiarity with Software as a Medical Device, EHR workflows, clinical data visualization, or AI applications in healthcare
Deep understanding of regulatory, safety, and risk management considerations related to medical software and digital health
Experience operating at the intersection of product strategy, UX maturity, and organizational transformation

Medtronic offers a competitive salary and a flexible benefits package. This position is eligible for a short‑term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP) and an annual long‑term incentive plan.
