Cork University Hospital (CUH) has approximately 800 beds, increasing to 1,000 upon the transfer of additional services. It employs approximately 4,571 staff across multiple professions and is the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science at University College Cork (UCC). UCC partners with CUH academically, fostering future development opportunities.
Hospital Specialties and Accreditations
CUH is a recommended Major Trauma Centre in Ireland, offering specialties such as Neurosciences, Cardiac Services, Orthopaedics, and more. It is JAG-accredited and a Magnet4Europe hospital.
Regional Role and Population Served
CUH serves as the tertiary referral centre for the HSE Southern area and the supra-regional area including Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford, and Kilkenny, catering to approximately 550,000 people in the HSE Southern area and 1.2 million regionally.
Health Regions and Local Healthcare Planning
Six Health Regions will be operational from 2024, each responsible for population-specific planning and delivery of health and social care services, aiming to improve accountability, governance, and decision-making at local levels.
HSE South West Region
This region manages all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, including hospital and community healthcare services, and encompasses:

The transition of services into the HSE South West from 3rd March 2025 will occur throughout 2025.
