Title of Job: Clinical Nurse Manager II Sacred Heart Ward Grade: CNM II Reports to: Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing Key Reports: Staff Nurses, Student Nurses, HCAs & Support Staff Type of Contract: Permanent - Full Time Purpose of the Role The role of the Clinical Nurse Manager II encompasses responsibility for the provision of the highest standard of nursing care to patients in Sacred Heart Ward. He/she will be responsible for the planning, co-ordination and the effective and efficient management of resources by leading, managing and developing the nursing and healthcare assistant team to ensure excellence in patient care. He/she will also be responsible for maintaining and developing professional standards including developing the scope of specialist nursing practice Sacred Heart Ward. Aims The philosophy guiding the position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission, Values and Ethos in the management responsibility of the Hospital in your position as Clinical Nurse Manager II To work in collaboration with the nursing team to ensure excellence in patient care through a well educated and highly motivated team of carers and the effective and efficient use of resources. Service Delivery To plan, implement and evaluate holistic nursing care to patients. To provide clinical advice, direction and support to nursing staff enabling the development and maintenance of a quality nursing service. To lead, manage and motivate the nursing team, delegating responsibility and accountability to staff nurses/student nurses/healthcare assistants as appropriate. To ensure all incidences/or difficulties concerning patients and staff are reported to the Director of Nursing/ Assistant Director of Nursing, documenting full details while being aware of legal requirements and implications. To assess, report and respond to complaints from patients and relatives. To maintain good communication with all staff, patients and relatives. To co ordinate the activities of the unit liaising effectively with all departments within the Hospital as well as external organisations to ensure the delivery of a quality service to the patients. To attend C.N.M.II/Heads of Department Meetings. To participate fully in promoting Best Practice, ensuring the delivery of quality patient care from admission to discharge taking into account the specific needs of individual patients. To participate with Nursing Management in Service Planning for the Hospital. To supervise and influence standards of professionalism in the unit e.g. confidentiality, dress code, hospitality and diplomacy etc. To deputise for Senior Nursing Personnel as required. Education To ensure high levels of professionalism are maintained through continuing education, development and participate in the implementation of a Staff Review and Development System. To keep up to date with the latest developments in Medicine/Nursing - reading current literature, attending lectures, seminars and refresher courses. To make recommendations to ensure that the hospital is at the leading edge of best practice in patient care. To stimulate and support clinical and research initiatives to improve patient care. To orientate new staff when assigned to your ward. To promote and support the quality process within the Hospital. To ensure adherence to directives relating to the scope of nursing practice. To maintain training records of assigned staff. Complete HDU Competency Assessment Resources To monitor and respond daily to staffing levels according to unit activity. To effectively manage Time and Attendance Management System, facilitating flexibility in ward roster if necessary. To participate in development of departmental budgets. To advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement or upgrading. To assist with recruitment and selection of staff. To provide support to Department of Nursing as required. To deal with difficult situations and conflict in a positive manner. T o manage Annual Leave and Rosters ensuring adequate staff and cost effective cover. Health & Safety To ensure the safe custody and recording of controlled drugs and ensure the Nurse in Charge carries the keys of the medication press/drug trolley on her person according to Hospital Policy. To ensure fire regulations are adhered to, fire exits free etc. To deal with emergency situations e.g. Cardiac Arrest/Fire. To be accountable for good work practices and health & safety within the nursing department, liaising with the Infection Control Committee & Health & Safety Committee and being alert to possible safety hazards. To ensure the implementation of safety measure in the storage and administration of blood and drugs, in accordance with hospital policy. To co-operate with infection control guidelines in the prevention of hospital acquired infection. To ensure the correct care, usage, maintenance and storage of all equipment in the area. To record and report all equipment defects, faults and have them repaired or replaced if necessary. To report adverse occurrences as per hospital policy. To practice and promote safe working practices and a safe working environment. Performance Review and Development Carry out performance assessment of staff. Participate in initiatives to enhance the skill mix of Nursing Staff e.g. shift changes to ensure knowledge of other wards. Quality Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional guidelines and relevant legislation. To implement quality measures in compliance with JCI & HIQA standards ensuring that a quality service is provided at all times. To participate in the assessment and evaluation of quality standards and the formalisation and updating of hospital policies. To communicate all policy changes to the relevant staff. To participate in Quality Improvement System and implement improvements/changes as appropriate. To actively participate in clinical auditing and to ensure that results from audits are acted upon at ward level To participate in yearly performance reviews with all staff in the department. To participate in environmental cleaning audits and action findings as appropriate. General To establish a stock control system in consultation with the purchasing department and be responsible for the maintenance and review of the system.
