About the Opportunity
Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is recruiting for two Senior Research Fellow positions within the WiSAR Lab (Wireless Sensor Applied Research Centre) as part of the PEACEPLUS-funded North West Centre for Advanced Manufacturing (NWCAM2) programme.
These roles will drive innovation in advanced manufacturing, embedded systems, and next-generation wireless technologies, working closely with industry to deliver impactful solutions for SMEs across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Position 1: Senior Research Fellow – Embedded Systems (Advanced Manufacturing) Overview
This role focuses on leading the development of embedded systems, firmware, and hardware–software integration for smart manufacturing, robotics, and industrial applications.
Key Responsibilities

Lead development of embedded systems for smart machines and industrial equipment
Design and implement firmware (C, C++, Python) across multiple MCU platforms (e.g., STM32, NXP, Microchip, TI, Nordic)
Develop solutions for real-time control, sensing, monitoring, and automation
Collaborate with industry to deliver applied manufacturing solutions
Support PhD researchers and contribute to research funding and publications
PhD (or equivalent experience) in Electronic, Computer Engineering, or related field
5+ years experience in embedded systems and firmware development
Strong experience in hardware–software integration for industrial systems
Experience across multiple MCU architectures
Industry engagement or technology transfer experience

Position 2: Senior Research Fellow – Wireless Solutions (Advanced Manufacturing) Overview
This role focuses on RF systems, antenna design, and 5G/6G wireless technologies for advanced manufacturing and industrial applications.
Key Responsibilities

Lead research in RF, microwave, and antenna system design
Develop solutions using 5G/6G, mmWave, and advanced wireless technologies
Conduct RF simulation, testing (including anechoic chamber), and system validation
Work with SMEs to design wireless-enabled manufacturing solutions
Publish research and contribute to funding proposals
PhD (or equivalent experience) in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
Strong experience in RF/microwave systems and antenna design
Experience with RF simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, CST)
Knowledge of wireless systems (5G/6G preferred)
Industry 4.0 / smart manufacturing experience
Knowledge of AI, machine learning, or vision systems
Experience with mmWave, THz, or advanced materials
Strong communication and collaboration skills

39 hours per week
