The Intermediate (typically 4+ years) Exchange on premise Administrator will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, and operational support of the organization’s Microsoft Exchange Server environments.
The role involves ensuring reliable email services, troubleshooting messaging and supporting ongoing initiatives such as the migration to Exchange Online.
What does this role involve?
Exchange Server Administration
Manage day‑to‑day operations of a Microsoft Exchange hybrid environment (on‑premises and Exchange Online).
Administer mailbox databases, Database Availability Groups (DAGs), mailboxes, distribution groups, and public folders.
Configure, maintain, and optimize Exchange Server components to ensure performance and availability.
Support and administer Exchange Online features, including policies, connectors, and Exchange Online Protection (EOP).
Manage Exchange archiving solutions, including Microsoft and third‑party tools.
Messaging Operations & Support
Troubleshoot mail flow issues, including transport, routing, and queue management.
Manage spam filtering, transport rules, and messaging hygiene policies via Exchange and EOP.
Perform routine maintenance activities such as patching, certificate management, and system updates.
Support Exchange‑related backup, recovery, and archiving processes.
Collaboration & Projects
Collaborate with infrastructure and messaging teams on upgrades, migrations to Exchange Online, and optimization initiatives.
Assist with Exchange version upgrades and mailbox migration activities.
Work with internal stakeholders and external vendors to diagnose and resolve messaging‑related issues.
What are we looking for?
Technical Skills
Substantial hands‑on experience administering Microsoft Exchange Server in an on‑premises environment (typically 4+ years).
Proven experience working in hybrid Exchange environments, including Exchange Online and Exchange Online Protection (EOP).
Strong understanding of Exchange architecture, mail flow, and messaging security concepts.
Experience with Exchange archiving, backup, and recovery solutions (Microsoft or third‑party).
Familiarity with routine operational tasks such as patching, certificate management, and system maintenance.
Core Competencies
Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills, particularly in complex messaging environments.
Ability to work effectively in a team‑based environment and collaborate across technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and support both operational and project‑based work.
Nice to Have / Advantageous
Experience supporting or participating in Exchange Online migration projects.
Exposure to broader Microsoft 365 services and integrations.
Basic scripting or automation experience (e.g., PowerShell) in a messaging context.
Experience working in enterprise or large‑scale messaging environments.
