About The University Or Research Institute
Dublin City University (DCU) is one of Ireland’s leading research-intensive universities, renowned for its innovative approach to higher education and its commitment to societal impact. Located at the Glasnevin Campus in Dublin, DCU provides a vibrant academic environment with state-of-the-art facilities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world solutions. The School of Health and Human Performance is celebrated for its cutting-edge research and strong partnerships with industry and public sector organizations, making it an ideal setting for ambitious doctoral candidates.
Research Topic and Significance
The central focus of this PhD studentship is to revolutionize the determination of minimum riding weights for Irish jockeys. This is a critical issue in the world of horseracing, as current standards may not fully account for individual differences in bone health and fracture risk. By exploring the intricate relationship between bone health and injury risk, this project aims to develop evidence-based strategies that will support jockeys’ wellbeing and extend their professional careers. The outcomes of this research have the potential to influence policy, improve occupational health standards, and set new benchmarks for athlete care in equestrian sports.
Project Details
This interdisciplinary research project is a unique collaboration between Dublin City University, the University of Galway, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, and the Jockey Accident Fund (JAF). As a PhD student in this project, you will be engaged in multivariate and longitudinal statistical analyses, development of interactive dashboards, and creation of normative data to inform practical interventions. You will have the opportunity to work closely with both academic and industry partners, contributing to publications, presentations, and outreach activities that disseminate your findings to a broad audience.
The funding package for this position is highly competitive, offering a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per year, €2,500 annually for research expenses, and full EU tuition fees coverage (€5,505 per year), totaling €30,000 per year for four years.
