Offer description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full‑time 48 month, fixed‑term contract position as a Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Galway.
The position is funded by the RECODE project under the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the CIVIC (Climate Insights and Values in Ireland’s Communities) project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland (EPA). The position will be based in the School of Business and Economics at the University of Galway and is available from 01st of March 2026 to contract end date of 28th February 2030.
The successful candidate will work in Dr Thomas van Rensburg’s research group which examines the social and economic impact of renewable energy, energy policy and climate adaptation in collaboration with a number of academic and industry groups in Ireland, Europe, Africa and China. In particular, the successful candidate will examine ways in which communities and citizens use renewable energy technologies to produce low‑carbon energy, accelerate the growth of renewable energy production and reduce their emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change. Renewable energy technologies have significant potential to mitigate the effects of climate change but their impact will depend on their widespread use. The successful candidate will consider the barriers and factors that influence the adoption and diffusion of these technologies by citizens, communities and other stakeholders. They will investigate the role of citizen science and climate action groups in climate change mitigation and adaptation. They will evaluate renewable energy and climate policies and consider how these could be made more effective in supporting citizens, communities and other stakeholders in their use of renewable energy technologies to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.
Salary: Research Fellow salary scale €65,889 – €86,014 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro‑rata for shorter and/or part‑time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
(Research Salary Scales – University of Galway)
Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 30/01/26. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
