Role Title:Clinical Nurse Manager II: MedEl Inpatient Bed Coordinator Job Reference Number:002408 Closing Date:Sunday 14th June 2026 Purpose of the Role: The purpose of the Inpatient Bed Coordinator role is to ensure safe, efficient, and timely use of hospital beds so that patients are placed in the right bed, at the right time, in the right clinical area. This helps to optimize patient flow throughout the hospital, minimize delays in admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensures patient safety and appropriate care placement and maximizes use of available bed capacity. The role of the CNM II bed manager is to: The Clinical Nurse Manager II must adhere to the Code of Professional Practice and Behaviours for Registered Nurses. Shows leadership potential to make an impact, influence, energise, and inspire others across the directorate and pan organisation. Embraces change and acts to implement evidence based best practice where appropriate. Is aware of and understands the need to adhere to Hospital and/or professional standards, policies, and procedures, relevant to their area of practice. Communicates effectively in English language, written, and spoken, as appropriate to job requirements. Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement. Ensure own mandatory learning and training is kept up to date. Manage Bed Allocation: Assigns beds to incoming patients (e.g., from Emergency Department, elective admissions, internal transfers). Matches patient needs (clinical specialty, infection status, acuity) with appropriate wards. Prioritizes urgent vs. routine admissions. Coordinates Patient Flow: Acts as a central liaison between: ED, Wards and nursing teams. Medical. Nursing. Medical social worker and Therapists (OT/ PT/ SALT). Admissions office and general bed management. Facilitates smooth movement of patients between departments and external community settings, SJH step down facilities and residential units. Supports Timely Admissions and Discharges: Works proactively with clinical and multidisciplinary teams to: Identify patients ready for discharge/ early discharge. Free up beds for incoming patients. Progress discharge pathways (home, step- down, LTC). Helps reduce Emergency Department overcrowding. Monitors Hospital Capacity: Tracks real-time bed availability across the hospital. Monitors length of stay (LOS), delayed transfers of care ( DTOC) and discharge timelines. Anticipates demand (e.g., peak admission times, seasonal pressures). Escalates capacity issues to senior management. Ensures Patient Safety & Infection Control: Allocates appropriate isolation rooms when needed. Considers all patient risks and requirements e.g. infection risks, falls, responsive behaviours, gender requirements, specialty needs and plans accordingly. Prevents unsafe placements (e.g., wrong specialty ward). Crisis and Escalation Management: Responds to bed shortages or surges (e.g., winter pressures, major incidents). Required: Registered General Nurse with The Nursing Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligible to register. 5 years post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting or relevant clinical area within the last 7 years. Demonstrate management experience throughout the last 2 years. Demonstrate I.T. skills including excellent keyboard skills. Experience in teaching and assessing the nursing and HCA team throughout the last 2 years. Demonstrate experience in working with the multidisciplinary team. Use of the hospital systems - EPR, PAS and Visual hospital system. Desired: Management course. Working knowledge of healthcare patient record systems. Specialist training in Older person care. Good understanding of the nursing home support scheme. Good report writing skills.
