The Patrick Fitzgerald Unit (PFU) is a 42-bedded medical/surgical unit located on the first floor. We have a very wide variety of specialities encompassing both medical and surgical patients.

* Surgical - General, Urology, ENT, Vascular
ROLE PURPOSE
You must practice within the Codes of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic.
Your primary function is to assist the CNM2 to manage, plan, organise and co-ordinate all services relating to both direct and indirect care and to communicate with medical consultants and appropriate senior administrative staff in the angiography department.
The CNM1 must rotate shifts with the CNM2.

Registered in the general division of NMBI
Evidence of personal professional development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Management of Clinical Nursing Practice
Assume responsibility for quality patient care delivery by:
1.1 Giving direct patient care and serving as a behavioural model for excellence in practice.
1.2 Assisting the nursing personnel in assessing individual patient needs and formulation of a plan of nursing care. Writing nursing orders when appropriate for implementation of nursing plan. Assisting the nursing personnel in recording, both in written and computerisation form, the effectiveness of the individualised care.
1.3 Setting standards of nursing practice and communicating these standards to the nursing personnel. Auditing and changing standards as necessary.
1.4 Evaluating nursing care given to patients within the clinical area (assessing and teaching) and, when appropriate, making recommendations for improvement of that care.
1.5 Functioning as a change agent - identify the barriers to more comprehensive healthcare delivery, modify behaviour and introduce new approaches to patient care.
1.6 Collaborating with other healthcare providers and make appropriate referrals when necessary.
1.7 Supervising and evaluating the level of patient care delivered by all staff under your supervision.
1.8 Providing an atmosphere conducive to learning.
1.9 Directing the orientation of all new staff to ease their role transition and improve their skills, attitudes and practices.
1.10 Initiating or assisting with the planning, presenting and evaluating of continuing education programs for clinical staff.
1.11 Guiding and assisting staff as they assume the responsibility of patient and family teaching.
1.12 Liaising with the Clinical Nurse Specialist and the CNM2
2. Management of Nursing Personnel
Provide leadership and direction to nursing personnel and others under your control by:
2.1 Scheduling unit personnel in a manner that promotes optimal use of staff, taking into account annual leave, sickness, absences etc.
2.2 Allocating nursing and support staff in an appropriate manner to met the workload and ensuring continuity of care whilst operating within allocated resources.
2.3 Participating in the recruitment and selection of personnel, appropriate to the needs of the department.
2.4 Managing human resources and productivity through a planned performance review programme by setting annual goals and objectives with staff within the unit.
2.5 Ensuring that personnel management is in line with hospital policies in the human resources manual.
3. Educational Responsibilities
Provide for the professional growth and development of nursing staff by:
3.1 The assessment and identification of training and development needs for nursing staff within the unit by setting objectives for learning and contribution to the development of training programmes where appropriate.
3.2 Identify teaching and learning opportunities within the unit.
3.3 Ensure that student nurse educational requirements are met.
3.4 Assume responsibility for identifying own educational needs and upgrade deficient areas through independent study, seminar attendance or requesting staff development programmes.
3.5 Evaluate own nursing practice and instruction of others and the effect these have on the quality of patient care.
3.6 Set annual goals and objectives with CNM2.
4. Management of the Unit
Maintain an environment that encourages quality patient care and staff satisfaction by:
4.1 Exercising leadership by personal example.
4.2 Delegating professional duties to staff recognising the professional competency of individuals.
4.3 Deputising for the CNM2 when required and accept forward responsibility.
4.4 Accepting responsibility by deputising for Matron as indicated and to work as part of the senior nursing team.
4.5 Collaborating with hospital personnel and other healthcare providers in planning care and making appropriate referrals.
4.6 Making recommendations relative to improving patient care and staff requirement to the appropriate administrative personnel.
4.7 Supporting and interpreting clinical policies and procedures.
4.8 Ensuring all relevant information is passed to staff within the unit.
4.9 Organising regular unit meetings and team briefings with the CNM2.
4.10 Reporting relevant matters to the head of department.
