Duties Description The Forestry Technician will assist the regional Wildlife Forester in projects related to habitat management and land management. Job duties associated include:
- Inventory and document access needs and infrastructure status for various State properties
- Assist in marking timber sales on state lands, Conduct forest inventories of public lands to determine and record such information as acreage, forest types, volume and quality.
- Utilize aerial maps to record location of property boundary lines, roads and other features.
- Conduct surveys of State lands to locate and identify forest health problems.
- Document forest health problems on maps and/or aerial photographs, identifying type and location of forest stands, acreage covered, and other information necessary for the survey.
- May maintain and operate field equipment such as hedgetrimmers, chain saws, weed whackers, safety equipment, and other two cycle equipment.
- May perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, cutting brush and wood, trimming and removing trees and shrubs.
- Work with herbicides to control vegetation on state-owned lands
- Assist with prescribed burns on State lands
-Conduct surveys of State lands to locate and identify forest health and invasive species problems.
- Document forest health problems on maps and/or aerial photographs, identifying type and location of forest stands, acreage covered, and other information necessary for the survey.
- Assist in other wildlife-related surveys and work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture
OR
One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
