The role
Principal Software Engineer - Data Services (Patient Care Systems)
At Medtronic Patient Care Systems, you will help build the digital heartbeat behind life‑saving cardiac therapies. Your work supports patients, clinicians, and the continuum of care through secure device connectivity, real‑time data platforms, and intelligent clinical tools.
Responsibilities
Lead the design, coding, testing of ingestion pipelines in the data platform using cloud‑native, serverless technologies.
Follow and extend existing CI/CD patterns in line with our IaC architecture tenets.
Understand end‑user access requirements and influence the design of user‑facing structures.
Establish a deep knowledge of our data set and shape the semantic understanding of our catalog.
Set up proactive monitoring and alerting using cloud‑native capabilities.
Design and implement automation for a self‑service model for data engineers.
Diagnose production issues and lead efforts to quickly restore services.
Use metrics to guide cost reduction and service improvement.
Collaborate with IT and business partners to identify process enhancements.
Mentor and guide junior engineers; provide team leadership experience.
Key Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 5 years of experience.
Data architecture knowledge, including ERD, primary / foreign key design and access strategies for big‑data capabilities.
Data engineering principles (batch, event‑driven) and associated architecture and observability tenets.
Hands‑on experience with AWS and native tools (Glue, Lambda, EMR, Athena, Lake Formation, S3, SQS, SNS).
AWS observability (CloudWatch, Cost Analyzer).
SQL (SQLServer, Trino).
Apache Spark (PySpark) and Iceberg.
Schema design and implementation (JSON/Avro).
GitHub Actions, Terraform, and containerization (Python, Docker).
Strong problem‑solving skills; strong written and verbal communication.
Experience leveraging LLMs in coding and testing.
AWS certifications are a plus.

Competitive salary, short‑term incentive via Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP), and a flexible benefits package. Pay range: 83,520.00 EUR – 125,280.00 EUR for Ireland.
