AboutWe are hiring Platform Engineers to work closely with software development teams to understand their needs and provide expertise and implementation of services to enable and operate at scale on AWS.Your role involves assessing technical requirements, recommending appropriate solutions, and overseeing the implementation process to ensure successful deployment. This early stage of the candidate screening is intended to check and test for the majority of the technical skills that a Platform Engineering team member will need to use regularly.What's involved?You are asked to code a small AWS environment consisting of:A VPC with at least one Private and one Public subnetTwo VMs, one in the Private subnet, one in the Public subnetRestrict access to the VM in the Public subnet to a single IP addressRestrict access to the VM in the Private subnet to only from the VM in the Public subnetBoth VMs should be able to reach the internet (either directly or indirectly)VMs can be Windows or LinuxThe resources must be codified using either Terraform or OpenTofuWe must be able to use your code to provision and then deprovision the resourcesYou can put any necessary instructions into a fileAll of the code, scripts, docs etc must be shared as a Git repository.There's no limitation or restriction on other tools or languages you can use for this taskStage 2: Technical Submission ReviewWhat's involved?The candidate's submission is processed using our actual workflow tools, the results of which are then used to conduct a short 30min code-review style session with the candidate.The candidate is provided with a copy of the technical assessment and if successful we then proceed to more traditional interview stagesStage 3: Candidate InterviewWhat's involved?A traditional candidate interview conducted over TeamsDuring this session, you can expect to be asked about both your technical skills and your experience as described in the CV/resume you providedWhat are we looking forBachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.Experience in using Public Clouds : You have experience running production workloads on scale in at least one major public cloud, preferably AWS.Infrastructure as Code : You have experience in writing, testing, and shipping IaC using Terraform or OpenTofu.Containers: You have in-depth experience using Docker and setting up schedulers such as containerized solutions like Kubernetes, Nomad, AWS ECS Fargate, or Google Cloud Run, and Serverless solutions like AWS Lambda or Google Cloud Functions.Linux : You have experience in installing, configuring and administering Linux in an enterprise or professional environment.Automation : You know how to "automate everything" (e.g. you are capable of creating CI/CD pipelines for any given environment, preferably with enterprise or professional experience on usage of Ansible or Puppet.Problem Solving : You are self-learning and can solve problems with a solution-oriented approach.Communication : You are able to communicate effectively to your team in English in a clear and concise mannerWhat you'll doAutomate the DevOps lifecycle : Platform engineers assemble the tools and processes that permit automation of development tasks within the DevOps lifecycle.Build bespoke internal tools : When an off-the-shelf tool cannot solve a problem, platform engineers create new APIs, CLIs, and apps, allowing developers to stay focused on product engineering.Provision and monitor infrastructure : Platform engineers implement the workflows that allow new infrastructure resources and development environments to be created on demand.Maintain and iterate upon Internal Developer Platforms : The platform team provides centralized IDPs that developers can use to achieve their aims. They maintain the platform as dev teams publish new requirementsSupport teams using the platform : Platform engineers communicate with developers to encourage platform adoption, promote its capabilities, and solve any usability queries.Debug and resolve reported issues : Platform engineers will use observability suites to efficiently locate the causes of reported problems and then apply fixes before they significantly impact developer workflows.Assess the opportunities offered by new tools : Platform teams regularly review new tools that become available in the industry and assess how they could be integrated into the IDP.
