Overview of role
The purpose of this role is to assist Radiologists and Radiographers during Magnetic Resonance (MRI), Ultrasound (US), Computed Tomography (CT), Fluoroscopic and General Radiographic examination of patients.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Carry out general patient care duties within Radiology Departments.
Ensure a clean and hygienic working environment.
Assist in maintaining agreed stock levels of consumable items.
Carry out required administrative tasks.
Maintain effective communication with patients and staff.
Patient Care
Treat all patients with dignity and respect at all times.
Patient confidentiality is essential.
Prepare patients for their examination, including assisting with undressing when required.
Prepare the Examination/Scan room for the next patient.
Give emotional support to anxious patients.
Escort, transport and manually handle patients from dressing to exam room and wards.
Ensure the highest standards of patient care are maintained, providing comfort and safety.
Infection Control
Maintain general cleanliness and tidiness of the department, focusing on own working area and shared spaces.
Ensure the MRI Scan Room is kept clean and tidy, especially MRI coils, shelving and pad storage area.
Familiarise with and adhere to the SSC Infection Control policy.
Maintaining Stock of Consumable Items
Ensure all consumable items are well stocked (e.g., earplugs, couch roll, CDs for MRI).
Stock each examination room with required medical/surgical and other items for the assigned area.
Ensure sufficient linen supplies are available.
Notify a Radiographer immediately if stock is low.
Administrative Duties
Demonstrate competency in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and limited Hospital Information System (HIS) use.
Scan documents into correct patient folders.
Copy and digitise CDs using specialised software when trained.
Answer telephone enquiries and respond appropriately.
Communication
Communicate with patients of all ages, explaining imaging procedures and aftercare.
Communicate any delays to patients promptly.
Liaise with wards to ensure patients are prepared and timely for examinations.
Prioritise patients for their examinations by liaising with Radiographers/Radiologists.
Maintain communication with all staff for effective teamwork.
Other
Participate in service audit as required.
Work variable shifts as assigned to meet departmental needs.
Qualifications & Experience
Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
Fluent in written and oral English.
FETAC Level 5 Care Assistant (desirable).
Working towards CORU certification for Radiographer (desirable).
Manual Handling, Basic Life Support, Fire Training certificates (desirable).
Experience in a care assistant role in a hospital or nursing home is beneficial (not critical).
Excellent customer facing, communication and teamwork skills.
Strong patient focus, flexibility, honesty and integrity.
