Job Title: Porter based in Dublin City Centre Department: Portering Services Department Report To: Portering Services Officer Salary: €35,000 to €40,000 depending on experience Annual leave: 26 days per year Working Pattern: 39 hours per week on a 5/7 roster, Monday - Sunday. You will be required to work the agreed roster/ on-call arrangements as advised to you by your line manager. Job Purpose: Portering services provide vital and essential support to all hospital departments. The post holder will undertake duties to ensure the provision of a smooth running, effective, efficient, fit for purpose portering service within the hospital. The range of duties listed below are those which may be undertaken by the post holder, either regularly or infrequently after appropriate and adequate training has been undertaken successfully. General Accountability Assist in maintaining awareness of the Mission and values throughout the hospital in relation to all portering activities Support the Portering Services Officer in developing and maintaining best practice Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital Key Responsibilities Ensure the provision of a consistently high portering service within designated patient service areas that are satisfactory to hospital management and the patient. To ensure all portering services are delivered punctually and to suit the needs of the hospital. Man the main reception desk and general surveillance for security purposes of people entering and leaving the building. Ensure all contractors/ visitors are registered in the logbook maintained at reception and all individuals entering the hospital on business are given the appropriate identification badge. Assist in reception of patients arriving at the hospital. Reception duties including receiving letters and parcels and distributing them to the appropriate departments Telephone switchboard duties when needed to ensure cover is provided for rest periods etc Order taxi request in line with hospital policy. Deal with enquiries from patients, staff and visitors in a courteous and professional manner. Receive and deliver stores from all areas and departments as directed. Collect and deliver pharmacy boxes to wards and clinic areas. Maintain hospital medical gases as requested in line with hospital policy. Receive medical gas deliveries and the changing of medical gas cylinders as required. Ensure all medical gas cylinders are checked on a daily basis and replace as necessary. To replace medical gasses where necessary on wards/departments. Transporting bottles from medical gas store. Control medical gas stock including conducting daily stock check, placing orders and completing dangerous goods documents. Maintain supplies in medical gas store area and change gas banks when required. Move and store medical and general equipment in accordance with manufacturers guidelines. Transport patients between ward and department areas as required to include pre-and-post operatively to and from theatre as requested. Assist in the movement and transport of patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via walking, wheelchair or beds. Assist in the movement of patients from ambulances, taxis, cars etc on arrival at the hospital. Assist in the lifting of patients in accordance with manual handling procedures. Be responsible for maintaining outside areas and corridors in a clean, safe and tidy manner. Maintain hospital grounds to ensure neat and clean Delivery and collection of goods, bloods, specimens and pharmacy items as requested To convey samples from wards and deliver to the laboratory. Carry out any cleaning as required of surface walls, floors, furniture and equipment. Clean patient transfer area. Preparation and maintenance of patient trolleys/ wheelchairs, including weekly oiling of wheels. Report any faults noted. Replace and change bed curtains as required. Assist in the security of the hospital including monitoring of security cameras and check all outer doors / windows are locked in the evening. Undertake security of premises and fire safety patrols. Control keys, lock and check all doors, and monitor CCTV. Ensure all keys maintained by the Portering dept are logged and stored appropriately Monitor entry to the staff car park and parking area to rear and front of hospital to ensure compliance with hospital policy. Undertake car parking allocation as requested by hospital management. Take precautions against fire, accidents, incidents and report to the appropriate staff To escort patients and visitors to various areas of the hospital. Remove equipment from wards/ departments as required. Be aware of and comply with hospital policy on waste disposal. Collect and dispose of ward waste including clinical waste daily. Collect and dispose of waste throughout the administrative areas of the hospital Collect and dispose of clean and soiled bed linen in the hospital. Sort into bins according to waste. Arrange for compliance with and completion of all relevant documents to enable waste to be collected appropriately. Respond to all fire alarms within the building. Fight fire is appropriately trained and safe to do so. Liaise with fire service staff and the Hospital Management's emergency plan team. Complete room changes / set up for meetings as requested. Carry out office moves as requested. Carry and respond to paging requests when carrying Portering services bleep. Carry an emergency bleep and react as required. Prioritise workloads and respond to all requests in a polite and timely manner. Work to set duties and tasks as outlined in weekly Rota and procedures. Ensure confidentiality is always maintained. Maintain a good working relationship with all wards, departments, hospital staff members. Ensure the hygiene standards are maintained within the designated areas and ensure high levels of patient care maintaining a high level of cleanliness within assigned area, complimentary with cleaning schedules Undertake any portering related activity at the request of the assigned manager in a motivated manner, utilising experience and initiative, ensuring activities are conducted in accordance with the assigned department's policies, protocols and portering requirements. Education, Learning & Professional Development Regularly update own knowledge and demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development Participating in mandatory training or other in-service training as required Health and Safety Advice on improvements that are required regarding equipment fixtures/fittings to provide quality care Ensure a safe environment for patients, relatives, staff and visitors in accordance with the obligations under the Health and Safety Legislation 2005 Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g. health and safety, infection control, storage and use of controlled drugs etc Quality, Risk and Patient Safety Participate in the Hospital's Accreditation Process and contribute to on-going monitoring, audit and evaluation of the service as appropriate. Participate in quality and patient safety improvement initiatives, as required Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications: Previous experience in a health care Have fluent command and understanding of English language to include spoken and written. Flexible attitude to work, hours and Understand patient movement and transfer through the hospital. Demonstrate the importance of a patient focused approach to Demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
