Directorate overview
The Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Directorate (SACC) focuses on the surgical patient process from outpatients through to discharge. Core principles are based around delivering a safe, personal, clinically effective and high quality service to all patients, with clear accountability for all staff members. St. James’s Hospital delivers a wide range of surgical services at a local, regional and national level. There are 13 Specialities within SACC, including Gynaecology. The directorate is managed by the Directorate Management Team led by Clinical Director and Operations Manager. Regular engagement with the Clinical Teams through Leads for each Speciality has been a focus, with Monthly Speciality Meetings to improve communication and develop each service.
Service overview
Gynaecological care is provided for women attending other departments at SJH, including oncology, haematology, hepatology, dermatology (including epidermolysis service), MedEl, and infectious diseases. Emergency gynaecological care is provided to the A&E Department. The service also offers emergency and surveillance obstetric care for pregnant patients, including high-risk cases requiring intensive multidisciplinary care. The ethos is to provide patient-focused care within a multidisciplinary framework, with a commitment to evidence-based practice and professional development.
Principal duties and responsibilities
Professional / Clinical
* Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment for patients under supervision of the Consultant.
* Document assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and notes according to standards.
* Communicate results and recommendations to patients and relevant professionals.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals to maximize patient potential.
* Participate in clinics, meetings, case conferences, and ward rounds, documenting findings and following up on actions.
* Contribute to developing and implementing procedures, policies, and guidelines in line with standards.
* Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and legislation standards.
* Seek advice from the Consultant on complex cases, adhering to best practices and governance.

Essential qualifications and experience
* General Registration or Trainee Specialist Division Registration with the Irish Medical Council.
* Relevant experience for the role.
Desirable qualifications
* Post-graduate qualifications (e.g., MCEM, MRCS, MRCP) are advantageous but not required.
* ATLS or ACLS certification is expected.
