Overview
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed-term position as a Research Fellow under the direction of Professor Michael Madden in the School of Computer Science at the University of Galway, Ireland. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Bairbre McNicholas and Professor John Laffey in the School of Medicine. Funding is available immediately to August 2026, with a possibility of an extension for a further 12 months.
Project context
The project is ICUSafeNotes, led by Dr McNicholas. It is part of the ARC Hub for HealthTech led by the University of Galway, in partnership with ATU and RCSI. The ARC Hub aims to fast-track research breakthroughs into commercial healthcare solutions. In ICUSafeNotes, we conduct research and development of multimodal machine learning models including ICU note summarisation and analysis of other medical data to support clinical decision making. This builds on prior research assessing the usefulness of a large language model to query and summarize unstructured medical notes in intensive care, and on ongoing research applying machine learning in patient care in intensive care.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate as part of the Machine Learning Research Group in the School of Computer Science under the direction of Professor Michael Madden.
* Conduct research and development of multimodal machine learning models, including ICU note summarisation and analysis of other medical data, to support clinical decision making.
* Build on prior work using large language models to query and summarize unstructured medical notes in intensive care.
* Engage with partners across the ARC Hub for HealthTech and related collaborators.

Details
* Salary: €65,889 - €86,014 per annum, pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
