Job Purpose
The Assistant Scheme Director is part of the educational team for an individual GP Training Scheme, delivering high-standard, coordinated training for doctors in specialist training in general practice. The role also supports the Scheme Director in promoting high-quality training standards. Duties may vary as needs evolve.
Key Result Areas
1. Undertake duties related to teaching, assessing, and facilitating small-group sessions with trainees (both face-to-face and virtual).
2. Assist with curriculum planning, development of teaching materials, and resource creation. Deliver curriculum through small group and plenary sessions.
3. Promote reflective practice and professionalism among trainees. Provide personal support and mentorship as needed.
4. Conduct trainee assessments and manage feedback processes.
5. Monitor trainee progression, providing portfolio guidance and support.
6. Ensure attendance and contribute to competency progression reviews.
7. Assist in developing assessment instruments.
8. Support GP Trainers and hospital supervisors, including managing day-release programs.
9. Perform quality assurance tasks, contribute to continuous improvement, recruitment, and curriculum evaluation.
10. Participate in committees and collaborate with the Scheme Director and National Programme.
11. Attend at least one Educational Conference annually, preferably both.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, expertise, and competencies:
Experience and Qualifications
If resident in Ireland:
* A fully qualified GP with MICGP, in good standing with the College.
* Registered with the Irish Medical Council on the Specialist Division for General Practice.
* Enrolled and compliant with the ICGP Professional Competence Scheme.
* Active in general practice.
If resident outside Ireland:
* Eligible for MICGP.
* Eligible to register with the Irish Medical Council on the Specialist Division for General Practice.
* Enrolled in the ICGP Professional Competence Scheme if appointed.
All applicants:
* Extensive experience as an independent GP.
* Significant GP training experience, nationally or internationally.
* Familiarity with the ICGP GP Training Curriculum and commitment to continuous improvement.
* Proven leadership and management in postgraduate medical education.
* Higher qualification in medical education or equivalent.
* Excellent communication skills and stakeholder management capability.
* Hold or have held a part-time clinical role of at least four sessions per week for three years within the last two years.
* Experience in quality assurance in higher education.
* Innovative, adaptable, and flexible with project work and regional familiarity.
Additional skills include strong verbal and written communication, excellent organizational skills, teamwork, self-motivation, initiative, and the ability to handle varied workloads under tight deadlines. Proven leadership and motivational skills are essential.
