We work on diverse projects across multiple sectors, including transport, pharmaceutical, industrial, energy, utilities, technology and residential.
As a Senior Ecologist with a significant level of experience, you will play a key role in our dynamic and close-knit team. You will be based in our office overlooking Dublin Bay and will lead and manage ecological projects, provide expert guidance, and ensure the environmental integrity of our work. You will liaise with in-house professionals and external partners, contributing to the development and implementation of projects that protect and restore biodiversity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Design, commissioning, scheduling, supervision and management of large geographical scale ecological survey programmes (including habitat, botanic, mammals, bats, birds etc.).
* Coordinate, supervise and mentor other ecologists (in-house staff and external sub-contractors) to ensure safe and efficient delivery on time and within budget; this includes line management responsibilities such as mentoring and performance reviews.
* Carry out complex data analysis and interpretation, including use of GIS software for collecting, analysing and preparing digital materials.
* Work closely with other staff and multi-disciplinary design teams to provide ecological design solutions and advice, including understanding environmental, planning and development-related issues beyond ecology.
* Prepare specialist ecological reports and monitoring plans (e.g. invasive species management plans, habitat restoration plans, woodland management plans, biodiversity action plans).
* Undertake and manage Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity chapters and Appropriate Assessments (AA Screening, NIS, NIR), including site surveys, impact assessment and mitigation recommendations.
* Provide technical ecological advice and recommendations to clients, including verbal, written and face-to-face contact.
* Manage project finances including monitoring and tracking budgets, targets and profitability for individual projects.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry changes, best practice, guidelines, legislation and policy; provide leadership to other staff on these matters.
* Prepare affidavits and evidence for oral hearings and act as expert witness where required.
* Consult with stakeholders including government departments, planning authorities, Heritage and Biodiversity officers, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Inland Fisheries Ireland and other public bodies.
* Support the Tendering team in the preparation of tenders.
QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING
* Degree in ecology, natural science or a related biological discipline; a postgraduate degree is highly desirable.
* Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) at the appropriate level.
* Full or eligibility for full membership of CIEEM.
* Strong technical report writing skills, with a proven track record in EcIA and AA reporting.
* Excellent working knowledge of Irish and EU wildlife and planning legislation, habitat and species survey design, and mitigation practices for large developments and protected species.
