Why this role is different You're trusted to run the function, not micromanaged You'll set KPIs that actually matter, not vanity metrics You'll work on applied AI and NLM / LLM initiatives without owning the day-to-day build You'll gain deep experience operating data teams alongside Legal and Compliance — a skillset that opens doors later This role prepares you for Head of Data / Director-level leadership, not another IC detour What you'll actually be doing Managing and developing a team of data scientists Setting clear goals, delivery milestones, and performance standards Running regular 1:1s, feedback, and development conversations Making sure the right work gets done — on time and to a high standard Partnering with Product and Engineering to prioritise work sensibly Working with Legal and Compliance to ensure data is used correctly Overseeing applied AI and NLM / LLM work from a delivery and risk point of view Spotting problems early and fixing them before they become blockers What they're looking for You've managed data science or analytics teams before You're comfortable setting KPIs and holding people accountable You've worked in regulated environments (healthcare, insurance, fintech, life sciences, etc.)You've dealt with legal or compliance teams around data usage You understand how modern AI (including NLM / LLM systems ) fits into products You've worked in a scale-up or fast-moving environment You communicate clearly and don't hide behind buzzwords You don't need to Write production code every day Be the smartest technical person in the room You do need to Know what good looks like Help people get there Keep standards high when things get busy Why people take this job Clear progression into senior data leadership Real ownership over people and performance Exposure to applied AI in a regulated setting (rare and valuable)Hybrid working with grown-up expectations A company that values outcomes over theatre Not for everyone.
