Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years (24 months) as a Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate for the “Working with key stakeholders to co-design strategies to support participation of young adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in Diabetic Retina Screening” project with the School of Psychology at the University of Galway, Ireland.
The successful candidate will be the lead researcher on the project and will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Jenny Mc Sharry (Lecturer and Health Psychologist in the School of Psychology), and the Lead Knowledge User, Dr Alice Le Bonniec (Behavioural Scientist at the National Screening Service).
This position is funded by a Health Research Board Applied Partnership Award and the National Screening Service and is available immediately to contract end date of 1st January 2028.
The project aims to co-design strategies to support Diabetic Retina Screening attendance in young adults with diabetes. The Irish Diabetic Retina Screening Programme offers free regular eye screening to people living with diabetes. Eye screening is particularly important in young adults; if problems are caught early, treatment is effective at reducing or preventing sight damage. However, participation is lower in young adults than in other age groups.
This applied project is co-funded by the National Screening Service, and will bring together researchers, people working in screening in Ireland, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes. A toolkit of strategies will be developed in three work-packages: Work-Package 1) Rapid review of the scientific literature. Work-Package 2) Interviews with young adults living with diabetes. Work-Package 3) Workshops to co-develop evidence-based strategies to support young people to attend Diabetic Retina Screening using the Behaviour Change Wheel approach.
The project will be hosted by the Health Behaviour Change Research Group in the School of Psychology, an internationally recognised centre of excellence in health behaviour intervention development, evaluation and implementation. The successful applicant will become a staff member of the School of Psychology at the University of Galway where we have a vibrant health psychology research community that offers multiple opportunities for career development through dedicated training, mentorship and networking activities.
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale €46,305- €59,063 per annum (subject to the project’s funding limitations) and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
