Medical Scientist – Permanent Position
Location: Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic, Blackrock, Ireland.
Job Purpose
The role of a multidisciplinary Medical Scientist is to assist with the provision of a quality laboratory service in line with the standards of Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic. As a key member of the Pathology laboratory team, the Medical Scientist demonstrates professional competence, teamwork skills and facilitates effective communication with colleagues in the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the Laboratory Services.
Ensure the safe delivery and coordination of services for patients, ensuring effective, efficient and quality service.
Participate as required in the training of laboratory staff.
Process samples in a multi‑discipline environment in relation to Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, including pre‑analytical checks, analytical stages and post‑analytical stages including reporting.
Ensure that all records are correctly and accurately maintained.
Facilitate effective communication with colleagues, patients, visitors and multi‑discipline team members, ensuring patient confidentiality is respected.
Contribute to the monitoring, recording and investigations for non‑conformances and audits.
Identify opportunities for the development of services that will improve the care of patients.
Attend relevant department and hospital meetings as required.
Contribute to quality improvement & risk management activities, including internal and external quality control and assurance programmes.
Participate in the hospital accreditation process and risk management programme.
Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department.
Assist with the orientation, induction and training of new staff as required.
Ensure mandatory training days are completed and all relevant HR system and policy requirements are met.
Work with the multidisciplinary team to develop standard operating procedures for the unit.
Demonstrate flexibility to support effective and efficient service delivery.
Learning and Education
Contribute to the requirements of professional practice and take personal responsibility for own professional development.
Stay up to date with evidence‑based practice and research, attending and participating in staff development programmes.
Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and provide support as necessary.
Identify and inform the Learning and Education Team of any training and professional development requirements.
Attend all mandatory training days and ensure that all mandatory training is up to date.
Quality Improvement & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with all relevant Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies and guidelines through regular audit programmes.
Participate in internal and external quality control and assurance programmes, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
Set and monitor core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service, and monitor performance through internal and external audit.
Participate in the hospital's risk management programme.
Essential Criteria
Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
Registration with CORU.
Competencies as per the BHHC Competency Framework.
