Medical Scientist
Post Status: Permanent
Department: Chemical Pathology Laboratory
Location: Beaumont Hospital & Affiliated Sites
Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist or other nominated Manager
Accountable to: Laboratory Manager
Salary: Appointment will be made on the Medical Scientist Scale (€45,279 - €73,721, LSI1 €75,148) at a point in line with Government pay policy
Hours of work: Full-Time, 35 hours per week

Key Duties & Responsibilities
General Responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a high quality patient focused service.
To perform such technical duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager, Chief Medical Scientist or their deputy/ies.
To assist in training Medical Laboratory Assistants, support staff and visiting workers as required.
To contribute to maintaining department accreditation with INAB through compliance with ISO15189.
To assist in the training of new and existing staff.
To assist in implementing measures for Safety, Health and Welfare to all staff.
To assist in providing statistical and management information when requested.
To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up‑to‑date knowledge.
To fulfil CPD requirements.
Any other duties as appropriate to the grade and qualifications.
To actively participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes.
To participate in the Directorate Joint Review Process.

Specific Duties – Medical Scientists

To report to the Laboratory Manager and Chief Medical Scientist in the Chemical Pathology Department.
To cooperate with and support all project work undertaken in the Laboratory Directorate, including but not limited to the Laboratory Modernisation (LabMod) and MedLIS projects.
To observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
To perform technical procedures to the highest professional standard as determined by the Consultant Chemical Pathologist /Chief Medical Scientist.
To participate in training staff and students as required.
To actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
To co‑operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
To ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and to assist and co‑operate with the Laboratory Management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist/Chief Medical Scientist.

General Duties

Validation of new methods, controls, preparation of reagents and controls as required. Preparing reports on aspects of the service. Assisting in answering phone queries from our client centres. Routine maintenance of instrumentation.
Preparation for participation in the on‑call service (for new fully qualified staff).

The job description is an outline of the post as it is currently perceived by the hospital and will be subject to review and amendment. This will therefore be subject to change in light of the various strategies for the hospital and the development of the Clinical Directorate model and any future developments that arise and will evolve and change over time.
Qualifications
Selection Criteria – Mandatory

Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc.
Registered, or eligible for registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
Compliance with Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, including proof of application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU by 30th March 2021.
Have the requisite knowledge and ability, including a high standard of suitability and professional ability, for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued (applicable to Section 38 applicants only).
Maintain annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register and confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
Be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such that a reasonable prospect of regular and efficient service is indicated.
Be of good character.

Selection Criteria – Desirable

Previous experience in clinical chemistry.

Note: If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service, or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re‑employment, that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme & Other Provisions) Act 2012. The abatement provisions will apply where relevant. It is not envisaged that the employing Department/ Office/ Body will support an application for an abatement waiver in respect of appointments to this position.
