Job Purpose
The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of Laboratory practice.
As a key member of the frontline team, the Phlebotomist will demonstrate professional competence, team working skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital.
The position requires a participatory approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities.
The Laboratory/Phlebotomy provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in the Laboratory/Phlebotomy services.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
Perform venepuncture and collect blood samples efficiently and safely in adherence with best practice and hospital procedures.
Ensure accurate labelling, handling and storage of specimens.
Ensure prompt transportation of specimens to the laboratory.
Ensure that infection control and hygiene standards are adhered to and maintained at all times.
Ensure all patients are treated in a professional and courteous manner.
Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
Maintain and clean phlebotomy equipment and work areas.
Undertake such other duties appropriate to the position as may be assigned.
Participate in a team approach encouraging flexibility to ensure that all Phlebotomists carry a proportionate share of the workload at all times.
Ensure that quality systems and the Phlebotomy services are patient focused.
Work within the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) and record non-conformances/adverse occurrences
Participate in team meetings.
Ensure that ethics procedures as per the laboratory via BHHC-QA-SOP-002 titled 'Ethics in the Pathology Laboratory and via hospital policy
Ensure that patient, staff and colleague confidentiality as well as information relative to any persons, suppliers or entities is maintained as per HR procedures as documented in the Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic Staff Handbook and the IT Data Protection Procedure.
Learning and Education
Take personal responsibility for own professional development and keep up to date with evidence-based practice and research.
Attend and participate in staff development programmes on an ongoing basis and sharing knowledge with other staff members.
Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and be available to provide orientation as deemed necessary, helping them to integrate as members of the team.
Assist in the training of staff/students in the department.
Attend all mandatory training days and ensure that all mandatary training is in date.
Comply with all HR system and policy requirements.
Quality Improvement & Risk Management
Ensure that there is compliance with all relevant Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
This includes responsibility for dealing with regulatory or professional bodies and inspections.
Contribute to promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department.
Participate in the requirements of the laboratories and the hospital's accreditation process.
Participate in the requirements of the hospital's risk management programme.
Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients.
Encourage evidence-based practice and assist in the dissemination and implementation of research findings.
Flexibility
This post requires a certain level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
The post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager.
Qualifications
A nursing qualification
And / or
Certified Experience with relevant training and experience.
Minimum six months experience in Phlebotomy
Good working knowledge of Phlebotomy Services
Basic knowledge of accreditation in laboratories
Skills / Competencies as per the BHHC Competency Framework
Basic IT skills
Quality and customer service focus
Interpersonal and communication skills
Prioritisation and delegation
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Attention to detail and accuracy
Training in cannulation and/or paediatric phlebotomy
Broad knowledge of the main clinical areas, in all aspects of the service
