This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.
Job Description
Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form. This Work Placement opportunity provides participants with a broad and meaningful range of practical experience in a modern GP surgery. Throughout the placement, the participant will receive mentoring and supervision from experienced staff members and will be supported to develop both professionally and personally in a healthcare setting.
The participant will:
* Assist and shadow the administration team in daily front‑office duties.
* Learn how to welcome and assist patients in person and over the phone.
* Develop skills in appointment scheduling, record management, and data entry.
* Gain experience handling correspondence, preparing documentation, and supporting the processing of prescriptions and payments.
* Learn about maintaining patient confidentiality and GDPR compliance.
The participant will have the opportunity to learn new and practical skills that are relevant to both healthcare administration and wider office environments.
Learning and Support
The participant will be supervised and mentored by the Practice Manager/Assistant and supported by the full medical team. Ongoing training and guidance will be provided to ensure learning outcomes are achieved. Training will include:
* Use of HealthONE (Practice Management Software)
* Telephone communications
* Email etiquette
* Daily operations and SOPs
* Formal training available: Microsoft Office, Medical Billing and Coding, GDPR for Healthcare, Customer service skills within healthcare, Diploma in Medical Secretary
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
