On-the-job and classroom-based learningDynamic work experience, working both indoors and outdoorsDevelopment of a variety of mechanical and practical skillsA QQI Advanced Level 6 Heavy Goods Vehicle Mechanic trade certificate with a leading Utility CompanyWhat the ESB Networks Heavy Goods Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship entails: This SOLAS standards-based apprenticeship lasts 4 years (208 weeks) and includes 7 SOLAS Phases and ESB Networks Off-Job Training:
Phases 1, 3, 5, and 7 are on-the-job, gaining experience alongside qualified Heavy Goods Vehicle Mechanics in garages or on-site.Phases 2, 4, and 6 are off-the-job training modules at SOLAS Training Centres and Technical Universities.Educational Requirements: Applicants must be at least 17 years old before June 1, 2025, and meet one of the following minimum standards:
Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement – 5 Merit grades or higher in Maths, English or Irish, Science*, and two other subjects.Junior Certificate – 5 grades C or higher in Maths, English or Irish, Science*, and two other subjects.Leaving Certificate Applied – 120 or more Credits.Vocational Leaving Certificate – 5 grades D or higher in Maths, English or Irish, Science*, and two other subjects.Leaving Certificate – 5 grade O6 or higher in Maths, English or Irish, Science*, and two other subjects (H7 not accepted as equivalent to O3; minimum 40% in required subjects at higher or ordinary level)FETAC/QQI Level 3 Major Awards – Minimum 6 modules including:CommunicationsMathematics or Application of Number and Functional MathematicsPersonal Effectiveness or Personal and Interpersonal SkillsNote: Science* can be replaced by Technology, Art, Craft & Design, Technical Graphics, Metalwork, Material Technology (Wood), Design Communication Graphics, Construction, Engineering, Home Economics, Biology, Physics, or Chemistry.
