Job Description:

RESIDENTIAL COUNSELLOR, PRIME WORKER

Work Location: The Salvation Army Broadview Village

Work Schedule: 7:00am to 3:00pm, 1:00pm to 9:00pm, 2:00pm to 10:00pm and 3:00pm to 11:00pm rotating to meet operational needs

Statement Of Purpose:

To provide support & advocacy for residents in meeting goals and needs

Accountable To:

Manager, Residential Programs

(CIC - for program needs as required)

Qualifications:


* Completed 2-3 year Developmental Services Worker Diploma or other equivalent degree/diploma related to human services
* 3-5 years’ experience working with people who have developmental disabilities and/or mental health challenges
* Experience in individual program planning
* Valid Standard First Aid certificate (including CPR)
* Training and/or experience in medication administration
* Nonviolent crisis intervention, and behaviour management skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team to provide a supportive and nurturing environment
* Computer skills (MS Office, internet, etc.)
* Training and/or experience in personal care (i.e., assisting with G-tube feedings, continence devices) is an asset
* Training and or/experience in supporting individuals through ambulates, mobilizers, transfers is an asset
* Valid Driver’s license and French language skills are an asset

Responsibilities:

A

PROGRAM

* Know and respond to safety and health care needs of residents
* Act as a role model for all residents as reflected by appearance, behaviour and attitude
* Perform Prime Worker duties as assigned by Residential Manager
* Provide support for resident’s personal development as decided through individual program planning
* Supervise and assist residents with meal preparation and clean-up
* Administer medication as prescribed and according to policies and procedures
* Support resident involvement in leisure activities (Christian Education, bowling, special events, etc.)
* Complete Shift Reports and update Communication Book
* Maintain pertinent residential records
* Support family involvement with residents, site activities and special events
* Follow and promote the agency’s and site program goals and philosophy
* Liaise with transportation companies, day program staff, other professionals, families, etc.
* Ensure learning opportunities are provided using agency and community resources
* Track, compile, analyze and make recommendations based on resident data

B

STAFF

* Maintain effective communication
* Assist in orientation as directed by Residential Manager
* Provide support and guidance to co-workers, placement students and/or volunteers and external agency staff
* Represent site residents and staff on committees and at other meetings as delegated by Residential Manager
* Attend and participate in meetings and staff development training at the discretion of the Residential Manager and Administration

C

HOUSEHOLD ORGANIZATION

* Adhere to site menu plan and food restrictions
* Ensure the general site appearance is clean and tidy before the shift is completed
* Maintain and account for use of site and resident monies, TTC tokens, taxi chits and household supplies, etc.
* Complete daily household routines as required (cooking, groceries, laundry and cleaning, etc)

HEALTH & SAFETY

* Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations
* Adhere to agency’s Health & Safety Policies and program
* Complete daily walkthroughs/inspections of site as assigned
* Report/Complete and forward maintenance requisition forms to main office
* Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner
* Responsible use of agency’s vehicles, equipment and property
* Follow the principles of nonviolent crisis intervention philosophy

E

ORGANIZATIONAL

* Adhere to standards, policies, procedures, values & philosophy of TSA and Broadview Village
* Participate in meetings and in-service training, as required
* Make suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures as applicable
* Represent the organization in a professional manner

Other duties as assigned.

NOTE: The position of Residential Counselor – Primary Responsibility may also encompass the designation(s) of

Prime Worker And/or, Counselor-In-Charge (CIC) As Described Below:

Designation: Prime Worker

A

Attendance and participation in all program meetings and/or agency events as applicable

i. Team Meetings

ii. Admission/Transfer/Discharge meetings

iii. Annual Open House

iv. Individual Program Plan Conferences

v. Program Review Meetings (monthly) / PA Days

vi. Consultations with other professionals

B

Completion and presentation of information for program related meetings

i. Assessments

ii. Program Reviews and Data Summaries including graphs

iii. Individual Program Plan conference package

iv. Reports, applications and consents as required

C

Development, implementation and evaluation of the Individual Program Plan (IPP) in consultation with the resident, Residential Manager, the site program team and other members of the IPP Planning Team

D

Ensure the following for assigned residents

i. Health Care appointments in accordance with Ministry and agency standards

ii. Support and/or coordination of day activities

iii. Leisure and vacation activities in accordance with resident preferences and needs

iv. Relationships with family, peers, friends, volunteers and others

v. The purchase, suitability and maintenance of residents clothing

vi. A current inventory of residents belongings

vii. Responsible use and documentation of residents finances

Designation: Counsellor-in-Charge (C.I.C.)

Statement Of Purpose:

The role of the C.I.C. is to oversee program needs in the absence of the Residential Manager

A

SHIFT

* Direct, delegate, coordinate, organize and ensure the completion of shift responsibilities
* Ensure relevant information is communicated
* In the event of staffing shortage, C.I.C. is responsible for the coverage of the succeeding shift until back up staff can arrive.
* Ensure shift reports and program data are completed and incident reports are completed and forwarded to main office
* Ensure emergency procedures are followed

B

HEALTH & SAFETY

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED: The performance of the job requires bending/twisting/liftingof 50 lbs, considerable walking; standing; writing; computer work; and light housekeeping.WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a group home facility. The incumbent works under generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste

Noise

Dealing with angry and abusive people

Verbal abuse

Handling garbage

Odours

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS: The incumbent may be exposed to risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:

Physical attacks by others (i.e., being attacked by aresident)

Exposure to infectious diseases

Exposure to toxic chemicals

Exposure to bodily fluids

Sharp objects

Other dangerous situations

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to Health and Safety rules):

Universal Precautions

WHMIS Training

First Aid/CPR certification

Police/Criminal Reference Check –Vulnerable Sector Screening

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $27.09 to $28.11 with a maximum of $29.13.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
