Position Summary
The ideal candidate will be a technical expert as a structural engineer with significant experience working in a collaborative team environment.
They will have large‑scale data center design experience, working knowledge of site and building design standards, experience with site selection and due diligence, and master planning for data centers, as well as design and peer review experience.
This position requires a collaborative structural engineer who can demonstrate technical expertise combined with the ability to effectively communicate the results of technical design reviews and direction to our A/E partners for multiple and concurrent data‑center design projects.
Job Description
This position is for a Structural Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) that will provide design review and guidance, technical leadership, and coordinated design direction for the structural engineering elements for data center design, permitting, construction, and site selection, due diligence, and master planning.
The Structural Engineering SME will work on multiple APAC projects and collaborate with the team launching Microsoft's best‑in‑class cloud infrastructure worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
The Structural Engineer SME will engage with key client stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction as well as external A/E consultants and contractors that specialize in data‑center builds to ensure that the client data center technical design standards and quality are met.
The successful candidate will provide structural engineering technical review and oversight for new data center designs, builds, leases, and renovations in addition to structural technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning, and permitting.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering (Master's Degree preferred).
Professional Engineer in Structural Engineering (licence preferred).
Minimum of 10 years' experience in structural engineering with experience leading large‑scale critical infrastructure projects.
Minimum of seven years of experience in due diligence for greenfield, brownfield, retrofit, and expansion of large‑scale facilities, including geotechnical report analysis, topographic and boundary survey review, structural design review, code analyses, covenant/restriction review, and coordination with authorities having jurisdiction, building departments, and utility purveyors.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical design approaches and decisions.
Experience navigating CAD, Revit, Sketch Up, Bluebeam, BIM software for drawing review and development of conceptual level master plans during site selection and early design phases is desirable.
Expert knowledge of building codes and regulations.
Experience working on mission‑critical projects.
Experience and working knowledge of land acquisition, master planning, permitting and development.
Provide structural engineering technical oversight for site selection and due diligence efforts with external and internal stakeholders.
