About the role

The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of Physiotherapy practice. As a key member of the frontline management team, the Senior Out Patients Physiotherapist will demonstrate managerial and leadership skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a participatory approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.

Job Background/Context

The Hermitage Medical Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities.The Physiotherapy Department provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in Physiotherapy services.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

o Management of all HMC patient and staff referrals by triaging, prioritizing and delegating each referral to the most appropriate physiotherapy provider.

o Work effectively with the other members of the senior management team to shape, provide and monitor out-patient physiotherapy services, ensuring all services are developed and evaluated.

o Hold a clinical caseload, working as an autonomous practitioner providing expert musculoskeletal triage, assessment, clinical diagnosis and management of patients.

o Ensure that the physiotherapy service is effective, of high quality and well-coordinated.

o Provide skilled physiotherapy assessment and diagnosis for patients with a wide range of highly complex conditions including post-operative patients.

o Demonstrating a high level of clinical effectiveness while acting as a source of expertise to fellow members of the physiotherapy service.

o Ensure patient records throughout the department are accurate and comprehensive in line with legal requirements and best standards of physiotherapy practice

o To be flexible with treating in-patients during periods of department leave and day care / orthopaedic inpatients after 4pm

o Participation in the weekend on call roster when required

o Facilitate effective communication within the Physiotherapy Department, with Consultants and with other multidisciplinary team members.

o Play an active role in the operational, strategic management and development of the physiotherapy service.

o Ensure that policies, protocols and procedures are reviewed for effectiveness and appropriateness and that changes are implemented as necessary.

o Ensure data collection and analysis to reflect the full extent of the physiotherapy service while monitoring activity, standards and outcomes.

o Co-operate with the Physiotherapy Manager inthe control of expenditure and the management of departmental budgets

o Deputise for the Physiotherapy Manager as appropriate

o Promote a patient centred culture of openness and responsiveness to positive and constructive patient feedback and ensuring patient dignity, respect and choice is maintained in their care.

Learning and Education

o Develop and co-ordinate hospital based clinical placements for physiotherapy undergraduates in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons and in line with the ethos of the University and the Hermitage Medical Clinic.

o Facilitate and foster the concept of reflective learning and analytical practice at undergraduate level, and ensure the students uphold the standards of the physiotherapy department.

o Actively lead and promote continuing education and research activities.

o Keep abreast of national and international guidelines, standards and protocols and ensure the development of the physiotherapy service is in line with national issues.

o Work with the Physiotherapy Manager, to promote an environment of research within the department, providing support for fellow colleagues involved.

o Keep the Physiotherapy Manager informed of relevant research findings and their implications for the musculoskeletal physiotherapy service.

o Maintain and develop own expert practice through CPD activities, keeping abreast of new developments across the spectrum of physiotherapy practice and integrating them into clinical practice.

o Take an active role in special interest groups relevant to the core physiotherapy specialties.

o Be an active contributor to in service training and education programs, delivering regular training for peers, junior and undergraduate physiotherapists.

o Ensure systems are in place for the induction, training and development of rotational physiotherapy staff.

o Work with the Physiotherapy Manager, to identify clinical research and audit priorities.

Quality Improvement & Risk Management

Ensure that there is compliance with all relevant Hermitage Medical Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements. This includes responsibility for dealing with regulatory or professional bodies and inspections.

Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through regular audit programmes and review engaging with the multi-disciplinary team where required.

Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department involving the team in continuous improvement initiatives and encouraging innovation.

Contribute to the setting and monitoring of core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service and monitor performance against these standards through internal and (where applicable) external audit.

Participate in the requirements of the hospitals accreditation process.

Participate in the requirements of the hospital's risk management programme.

Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients.Encourage evidence-based practice and assist in the dissemination and implementation of research findings.

Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures for the development of the Unit.

Provide clinical leadership in proactively addressing ethical and quality of service issues with multidisciplinary team members and hospital management.

Develop a culture of safety, promoting positive reporting of incidents and near misses; investigate and take remedial action on incidents or near misses involving patients and staff according to hospital policies, protocols and guidelines.

Knowledge/

Experience

Qualifications

Knowledge of Vestibular Rehab

Hold a physiotherapy qualification recognised by the physiotherapist's registration Board at CORU

I.S.C.P. recognised equivalent to above

Minimum of 4 years post graduate satisfactory experience

Knowledge of the operational procedures in the Physiotherapy Department

Current member of CORU

Ability to participate in orthopaedic evening service (post induction)

Quality focus

Interpersonal and communication skills

Prioritisation and delegation

Acupuncture, Dry needling, Pilates, Orthotic prescriptions

Knowledge/ Experience

Post graduate qualification diploma /masters in management /Clinical area

Member of relevant special interest group

Teaching/tutoring experience

Experience in training/supervision of junior staff/students/assistants

Broad knowledge of the main clinical areas, in all aspects of the service

Background knowledge of Hospital operations
