Position Summary
This Senior Research Coordinator position provides an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and inclusive research team at University College Cork (UCC), hosted by UCC’s nasc Research Centre and under the supervision of Professor Cormac Sreenan. The individual appointed to this position will play a key role in the project, acting as the technical lead and contributing towards the path to commercialisation.
gVID is a new 2-year project funded by Enterprise Ireland's Commercialisation Fund. This Fund is designed to support universities in Ireland to translate their research into innovative and commercially viable products, services and companies. The technology we have developed offers a cost-effective and scalable method for generating and distributing customised video ads using Generative AI, producing longer videos with smoother frame transitions and significantly enhancing motion realism compared to the state of the art. The key objectives of the project are to develop a minimum viable product and define a pathway to commercialisation based on allowing customers to significantly enhancing their return-from-investment from digital marketing.
We are looking for a very experienced researcher to join our team as a Senior Research Coordinator, taking on the role of project technical lead. The appointee will be expected to provide leadership on the use of generative AI for developing the machine learning model, system integration and deployment, analysis and optimisation, working closely with the Principal Investigator and managing the technical team members. The appointee is also expected provide leadership for the path from technology and onwards towards commercialisation.
A suitable candidate will have a PhD plus 8 years of directly relevant post-doctoral experience including at least 5 years in industry. The candidate must be able to demonstrate a convincing interest in joining a team focused on commercialising innovative technology in the exciting and quickly developing generative AI area and have completed a programme for entrepreneurship training.
Project Title: Automatic Video Commercial Generation Service (gVID)
• Define and drive the overall technical architecture and design decisions for the project.
• Establish coding standards, best practices, and development methodologies across the team.
• Make critical technology stack decisions and evaluate new tools or framework.
• Conduct architectural reviews and ensure scalability, security, and maintainability.
• Lead and mentor a team of developers, providing technical guidance and career development support.
• Conduct code reviews and ensure quality standards are maintained.
• Facilitate technical discussions and resolve complex technical challenges.
• Foster a collaborative environment and promote knowledge sharing within the team.
Project Delivery & Planning
• Work closely with stakeholders to translate research innovations into product solutions.
• Break down complex features into manageable tasks and provide accurate effort estimates.
• Ensure project milestones are met while maintaining code quality and project reporting deadlines.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks that could impact project delivery.
• Engage closely with the Commercialisation Lead for the project to refine the market opportunity and agree the path to commercialisation.
• Lead the interactions with the UCC office of Technology Transfer in regard to Invention. Disclosures and steps towards a potential spin-out company.
• Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
Specific Requirements
* A PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, in a topic directly relevant to video and/or AI.
* At least 8 years directly relevant post-doctoral experience, with a minimum of 5 years in industry working on AI.
* Evidence of deep technical expertise in both video and AI as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and technical accomplishments, such as new products or services.
* A commitment to commercialisation of technology, evidenced by prior completion of a relevant training course.
* Experience of project management and driving outputs from R&D activities.
* Intimate knowledge of the technology lifecycle spanning R&D through to deriving value for stakeholders.
* Experience of both technical leadership and team leadership.
* Ability to represent the project when interacting directly with external and internal stakeholders.
* Excellent program management skills and a demonstrated track record of managing multiple projects with evidence of good management practice.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with staff, students and stakeholders.
* Ability to develop good working relationships.
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary research team environment and working with people from a wide range of cultures.
* Capacity to manage and prioritise a high workload, with a track record of delivering results under pressure and on time.
* Excellent it skills including ms office, spreadsheet packages, and smartsimple platforms such as sesame.
* Demonstrated experience in team-building and problem solving
* Qualification in lean management or similar.
* Track record in raising/managing research grant income from national and european funding bodies.
* Experience of budget management and managing industry collaborations in a research environment.
* A broad understanding of the nasc and related fields including an appreciation for the needs, priorities and associated challenges for industries within this sector.
* A good understanding of the research funding environment in ireland, europe and further afield.
* Familiarity with the process of translating scientific research into application via commercialisation, policy formation, public engagement etc.;
* Knowledge of IP protection, academic publication and other established methods of disseminating and commercialising research outputs;
* Experience in the generation of newsletters, annual reports and outreach materials
