Overview
Healthcare Assistant - Cardiology and Radiology at UPMC Waterford. Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Job type: Permanent.
Role Summary
The holder will work across the Cardiology and Radiology Departments on a shared 50:50 basis. Responsibilities include chaperone and procedural support in Radiology/Ultrasound for intimate and ergonomically challenging scans (3 days per week) and technical assistance in performing 12‑lead ECGs and fitting ambulatory monitors in Cardiology (2 days per week, including Saturday clinics as needed).
Responsibilities
Cardiology Department
* Turn on all testing systems at start of day and shut down at end of day.
* Print daily work lists from CVIS.
* Generate patient identification cards post-implant of Cardiac Implanted Electronic Devices.
* Daily cleaning of testing equipment and surfaces.
* Maintain and restock stock/consumables in the test room; order via stores.
* Ensure adequate patient gowns and manage linen.
* Escort patients within the hospital as required.
* Know how to activate Code Blue in case of emergency.
* Provide chaperone support when requested by patient or cardiac physiologist.
* Request and assist with Patient Satisfaction surveys; upload responses to the UPMC portal.
* Undertake other duties as reasonably required and comply with Health & Safety regulations.
* In procedure rooms, ECG/Monitoring room duties include performing 12‑lead ECGs, fitting ambulatory monitors, downloading data for analysis, and preparing reports; patient diary guidance provided as needed.
Radiology Department
* Welcome and assist patients and guardians; escort to MRI suite and manage paperwork.
* Check labels for iv gadolinium and Buscopan as applicable; maintain privacy and confidentiality of patient information.
* Assist Radiographers during imaging examinations, including patient and equipment handling.
* Assist with consent forms and patient screening checks (Name/DOB/Address, metal history, forms signed).
* Assist with gowning, removing jewelry, and securing belongings; provide patient orientation to MRI procedures.
* Ensure rooms are tidy and stock is replenished for morning and afternoon sessions.
* Support coil and patient setup for scans; manage scan paperwork and insurance details; address outstanding queries in communications.
* Transfer patients to/from scanning areas and prepare rooms for next patient.
* Monitor stock levels of consumables and restock cannulation trolleys, gowns, couch rolls and other supplies.
* Assist with patient transfer from wards to imaging areas and ensure timely transport.
* Provide general assistance across MRI, CT, Ultrasound, General X‑ray, Theatres, and PACS areas as rotation develops.
RIS / PACS Office Support
* Assist with image/CD requests and transfers via BEAM; maintain documentation and filing systems; provide administrative support as directed.
* Understand data quality standards and GDPR/confidentiality guidelines.
Ultrasound Department
* Escort patients to/from ultrasound rooms; assist Sonographer/Radiologist with workload and sterile procedures.
* Monitor in‑patient lists on RIS; liaise with wards for transport and bladder preparation where needed.
* Assist with patient transfers, gowning, lifting, positioning, and equipment handling; chaperone for intimate scans.
* Follow infection control procedures; sterilize probes; housekeeping; monitor and replenish stocks; maintain professional standards on consent and confidentiality.
Routine Maintenance of Equipment
* Assist Radiation Protection Officer or Radiographer with QA duties; report faults to Radiography Service Manager; assist with equipment breakdowns.
Administrative
* Provide administrative and clerical support, scan paperwork, process insurance documents, and manage RIS registrations.
* Answer phones, relay messages, maintain stock records, and support service planning and improvement with Radiography staff.
Education and Training
* Participate in departmental training, audits, inductions, and ongoing professional development; maintain knowledge of key policies (risk, OH, health and safety, HIQA standards, etc.).
Information Resources
Be proficient with RIS, PACS, CVIS and other related systems.
Health and Safety
* Work safely under relevant legislation and report risks, accidents, and near misses; wear PPE as required; comply with HIQA standards and UPMC protocols; participate in sustainability initiatives as applicable.

Person Specification
* A Fetac/QQI Level 5 in Health/Social Care is essential
* Previous experience in Cardiology and/or Radiography is desirable
* Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; strong communication and clinical skills; fluent in English; computer literate; flexible and proactive.
