As a Senior Packaging Engineer, you won’t just design packaging: you’ll shape how products move across the globe in a world of rapidly evolving environmental expectations. This new role is your opportunity to build something from the ground up, driving smarter, leaner, and greener packaging solutions across all Itron manufacturing global locations.
You’ll be the expert who brings clarity to complexity: optimizing packaging for PCBA and finished goods, ensuring compliance with new regulations (EU and others), and championing reusable solutions that support our long‑term circularity goals. Embedded in high‑impact programs (both New Product Introduction (NPI) and sustaining engineering) you will collaborate across functions, influence decision‑making, and bring fresh thinking where it’s urgently needed.
Responsibilities
Design & Development
Develop and optimize packaging solutions for PCBA and finished goods globally.
Ensure packaging designs comply with evolving environmental regulations and sustainability standards while driving simplification.
Create and update technical documentation, specifications, and test protocols.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Be part of NPI teams, contributing to early design and industrialization discussions. Influence decisions across diverse teams, ensuring packaging considerations are integrated early and effectively.
Collaborate with sustaining engineering teams to improve existing packaging performance and reduce cost.
Work closely with manufacturing sites, supply chain, quality, external partners, and suppliers.
Operational & Regulatory Excellence
Stay current on new regulations related to environmental impact, reuse systems, recyclability, and waste management.
Ensure packaging systems are optimized for logistics, factory handling, and durability across multiple touchpoints.
Partner with external packaging vendors and manage the currently semi‑outsourced packaging design activities.
On-Site & Field Activities
Travel to and work on factory floors as needed to validate packaging performance and gather operational insights. (Travel requirements: 10%)
Conduct packaging tests (drop, vibration, climatic exposure, etc.).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
Experience with packaging design software.
Deep expertise in EU environmental and packaging regulations, manufacturing quality norms and standards (ISO, EN, and other regulatory frameworks), and the ability to apply them effectively in operational and manufacturing environments.
Knowledge of materials science and packaging test methodologies.
Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and project management skills.
Ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams and external suppliers.
Fluency in English; French / German / Italian are a plus.
This role is open across several EMEA locations and offers a hybrid work model combining onsite presence, remote work, and travel to manufacturing sites. #LI-JP1 #LI-hybrid
