Background
With the expansion of the neurocranial service in the Beacon hospital, a high observation unit has been developed within a medical surgical unit. The unit will provide specialised care for patients undergoing both neuro interventional radiology (IR) procedures and neurocranial surgeries.
Overall Purpose of the Job
To provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.
To provide direct nursing care to an assigned patient load and demonstrate skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

Care of patients pre and post neurocranial surgery and neuro IR procedures.
Provide direct care to assigned patients.
Take the nursing history, summarise data, and state nursing diagnoses or patient care needs.
Observe and record signs, symptoms, and behaviours, including physiological status of patients; present assessment of changes, propose revision of interventions, and desired outcomes.
Follow policy for activating an individualised plan of care for newly admitted patients.
Deliver designated nursing interventions to assigned patients that are consistent with the stated medical plan of care.
Perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures, and assist others with patients’ activities and care.
Execute consultants’ orders for all assigned patients; safely and properly administer medications and treatments.
Notify appropriate nursing and medical staff to changes in the patient’s status.
Independently perform duties and assumes responsibility for care of assigned patients.
Perform techniques and routines in the specialty service area.
Perform or assist others to perform proper aseptic techniques, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
Document nursing care in all assigned patient records.
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
Evaluate care given including the patient response.
Reassess and document the proposed revision of interventions and desired outcomes.
Demonstrate ability to assess patient’s understanding of and compliance with instructions and health‑care teaching.
Review documentation of instructions, teaching topics, and patient response with the Nurse Manager or designee.
Adhere to internal controls established for the department.
Perform ad hoc duties as required.

Clinical Responsibilities

Familiar with and adhere to The Professional Scope of Practice Framework (NMBI 2000).
Ensure patients’ needs are individually assessed.
Plan and implement a care plan and evaluation process.
Involve the patient’s families or significant others as appropriate.
Provide care in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all nursing and hospital‑wide policies and guidelines.
Participate fully in patient’s meal and special dietary requirements.
Delegate appropriately based on skill level and knowledge of individuals to whom tasks are delegated.
Document professionally, legibly, and in a timely fashion.
Participate in Total Quality Management processes: identify quality, policy or guideline issues; evaluate current practices against best practice; set standards using structure, process and outcome; support audit processes; contribute to the Hospital Wide Accreditation Cycle.

Managerial Responsibilities

Timely identification and communication of any issues to the Nurse Manager.
Demonstrate confidence and competence in all hospital policies and guidelines.
Efficiently record all necessary documentation.
Effectively manage complaints.
Monitor all risk‑management processes.
Maintain interdisciplinary communication processes.
Efficiently utilise pay and non‑pay resources.
Deputise for the Nurse Manager as appropriate.
Participate in all ward and hospital nursing communication processes.

Professional Responsibilities

Attend all mandatory education sessions promptly.
Maintain a professional portfolio.
Ensure personal and professional demeanor positively reflects nursing and Beacon Hospital.
Identify potential and beneficial topics for nursing research.
Educate patients and families whenever possible.
Attend study days or courses as required.
Serve as a preceptor or supervisor to students and newly appointed staff.

Educational Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, develop teaching skills and participate in planning and implementing orientation and teaching programmes for student nurses.
Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager in compiling proficiency assessments for student nurses.
Identify training needs pertinent to the clinical area.
Contribute to continual enhancement of learning opportunities.
Participate in the clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff.
Develop leadership ability to act as an effective role model.
Assume responsibility for personal learning and development needs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain a professional appearance and dress code.
Remain flexible to meet hospital needs, floating to other departments as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications: NMBI Registered General Nurse licence in good standing.
Experience: 2 years post‑graduate experience in neuroscience nursing.
Competencies and Knowledge:

Teamwork: Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team; demonstrate motivation and innovative approach.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Present information clearly and concisely; understand change management.
Planning & Organising: Evidence of effective planning, organising, and time‑management; flexible approach to rotations, rostering, night duty, on‑call duties.
Knowledge: Recent and relevant experience in specialised area and acute hospital setting; knowledge of new developments; national nursing strategies; focus on quality; empathise with patients, relatives, and colleagues with dignity and respect.


Personal: Flexibility to ensure effective, efficient service delivery; demonstrate flexibility as required by the manager or hospital management.
