Locum Consultant Neonatologist
Purpose of the Role
This position contributes to the clinical care, education and development of neonatal services at Rotunda Hospital and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) across Temple Street and Crumlin sites. It supports the transition toward a comprehensive neonatal model of care at the new Children’s Hospital.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Act as Locum Consultant Neonatologist for The Rotunda Hospital and CHI.
Provide patient care in OPD, supervise junior colleagues, and support the educational programme within the department.
Participate in clinical management, on‑call rota and neonatal departmental governance.
Undertake risk management, critical incident investigation and roster oversight.
Perform child protection duties and ensure systems for at‑risk or vulnerable neonates.
Contribute to clinical governance, quality assurance, data reporting and audit activities.
Organise and deliver teaching for undergraduate, postgraduate, nursing, advanced nurse practitioner and paramedical staff.
Supervise and train non‑consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) and support their professional development.
Engage in research, clinical audit and continuous professional development.
Support major incident planning and structured pre‑hospital responses as required.
Attend and participate in meetings relevant to the post, including Medical Board and strategic departmental meetings.
Professional Experience and Qualifications
Registration as a specialist in paediatrics or neonatology on the Irish Medical Council Specialist Division.
Minimum two years certified postgraduate training in neonatology.
Clinical fellowship in neonatology (national or international).
Significant experience in acute unscheduled care at local and national levels.
Experience in developing, applying and reviewing evidence‑based decision making.
Strong communication, leadership and team‑management skills.
Knowledge of Irish health sector, national programmes and health reform agendas.
Proficiency in hospital data/information systems and computer skills.
Commitment to continuing professional development and compliance with professional competence assurance.
Health & Safety Compliance

Quality, Risk & Safety Responsibilities
Participate in legislative and regulatory requirements for quality and safety.
Support and implement quality improvement initiatives.
Engage in audits and national standards programmes.
