Senior Professional Design Engineer, Telecoms
Location: ESB Carmanhall and Leopardstown, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Ireland
Salary: €59,000 - €70,000 per annum
Closing Date: 8th January 2026
Travel: Travel nationwide to conduct site surveys and visits as needed for project meetings and design scoping. Flexible and smart working arrangements may be available.
Overview
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading and shaping the operational telecoms design activities across ESB Networks Telecoms programmes. This role supports the transformation and digitisation of ESB Networks Telecoms, ensuring long-term reliability and optimisation of critical infrastructure. You will manage the entire telecoms solution design process end-to-end, from requirements gathering and options analysis through to detailed design documentation and commercial proposals. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, ensure safety through good design, and develop design risk assessments and comprehensive design packs.
Key Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end solution design from requirements gathering to bid submission and act as a solution architect for complex projects with multiple technologies, systems and stakeholders.
Contribute to technology roadmaps, commercial and operational models, and design pack content for delivery teams.
Communicate and present proposals and business cases to customers and senior leadership.
Contribute to the development of content for design packs to delivery teams.
Assist and support the Design Team Manager in planning and coordinating team tasks across design workstreams.
Produce and review telecoms Scope of Works and costs for Capital Approvals; conduct design risk assessments and provide required information.
Travel nationwide for site surveys and project scoping meetings.
Maintain ongoing commitment to developing technical and leadership competencies; support knowledge transfer within the team.
Maintain safety through good design and assist the designated telecoms PSDP contact person during non-regular works projects, ensuring safety documentation and safety file content are current and compliant.

Experience & Qualifications

Level 7/8 Engineering qualification.
Full clean EU driving licence.
Minimum of 5-7 years relevant experience.
Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to act independently and take initiative.
Experience in a technical, design process or project management functional area.
Strong analytical and documentation skills for producing technical proposals; strong problem-solving abilities.
Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, to business and technology audiences.
Experience working with geographically dispersed and centralised teams.
Knowledge in Telecoms/Utility grade architectures (e.g., LTE, IP/MPLS, DWDM, Layer 3 routing) and related design considerations.

Desirable

Chartered Engineer or active progression toward professional title (e.g., CEng).
Telecoms/Networking Certifications (e.g., CCNA, MPLS/TP, Wireless Microwave, Cellular LTE).
Leadership training and mentoring capability.
Postgraduate upskilling relevant to design accreditation.
PSDP/PSCS and Designer role training/certification and demonstration.
Interest in mentoring within ESBN and knowledge of relevant policies, standards, and health & safety legislation.
Experience in preparing design scopes of work, costing estimates, business cases, and design packs; experience in complex bid proposals.
Experience in scheduling (MS Project) and project management methodologies and strategic planning.
Advanced IT skills including MS Teams and MS Power Apps.

Location
Networks Telecoms is based in ESB Networks, Leopardstown Rd, Sandyford, Co Dublin. Flexible arrangements may be considered. Travel within Ireland is a requirement.
Reporting
Reports to the Design Team Manager, Telecoms Strategy & Business Support, Networks Telecoms.
