Principal Automation Engineer Key Responsibilities

Software Development & Design
*
Lead the design and implementation of automation software for PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, motion control, vision systems, and robotic platforms.
*
Define and maintain software architecture and coding standards across all projects.
*
Provide hands-on development, debugging, and troubleshooting throughout the project lifecycle.

System Integration & Compliance
*
Collaborate closely with mechanical and electrical engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
*
Ensure software solutions comply with industry regulations and standards (e.g., GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11, GMP).
*
Review and contribute to system requirements, functional specifications, and design documentation.
*
Leadership & Innovation
*
Mentor and support the development of junior software engineers.
*
Drive continuous improvement in software development practices, tools, and processes.
*
Contribute to the organisation's technical road map and lead innovation initiatives in automation technology.
Essential Qualifications
o
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
o
10+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation software development.
o
Expertise in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider EcoStruxure).
o
Proficient with HMI/SCADA systems, motion control, and safety system integration.
o
Solid understanding of regulated environments, including pharmaceutical and/or food industries (GMP, GAMP, validation protocols).
o
Experience with robotic systems (Delta, SCARA, Cobots) and vision system integration.
o
Strong knowledge of control system design, fieldbus protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profinet), and industrial networking.
o
Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
o
Proficiency in high-level languages such as Python, C#, or C++ for middleware and test applications.
o
Experience with MES/ERP integration, data logging, and Industry 4.0 solutions.
o
Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for industrial automation systems.
o
Familiarity with qualification and validation activities (DQ, FAT, SAT) in regulated environments (FDA, EMA).
o
Experience in agile, cross-functional development teams.
o
Understanding of DevOps principles and tools in the context of automation (e.g., version control, CI/CD).
