About the Role
We require an experienced civil engineer to work on the delivery of wind farms, solar farms, energy storage and power grid infrastructure projects.
The role will involve reviewing civil engineering designs provided under design & build contracts, preparing designs for elements of renewable energy projects, carrying out site assessments, reporting and providing technical support to the project management team in taking projects through the pre-construction and construction phases.
The majority of our projects are in Ireland, with some in the UK.
The role presents an opportunity to build a career in the fast-growing renewable sector where technology is developing rapidly.
We welcome applications from engineers with strong technical skills but who may not have an industry background.
We are confident that our strong in-house industry knowledge will provide the necessary support for the right candidate to transition to our sector.
Responsibilities
Civil Engineering Project Support
Provide civil engineering support on renewable energy projects during planning, pre-construction and construction stages.
Review designs of civil and structural engineering elements of renewable energy projects, including roads, drainage, geotechnical design, wind turbine foundation, solar PV piling and mounting structures and other related infrastructure.
Review designs of substation buildings, compounds and equipment plinths against ESB, EirGrid and Building Regulation requirements.
Attend construction meetings both on site and remotely.
Carry out site visits to monitor and review general progress and quality of contractors' construction works.
Carry out site visits to perform building inspections, steel and concrete inspections
Provide input for the preparation of Employer's Requirements and other technical documents for inclusion in construction contracts.
Support PM team with review of tender documents from civil contractors.
Support PM team in managing construction interfaces between contractors and other project stakeholders.
Assist the civil engineering and project teams with project cost estimates and tendering for design services.
Liaise with clients, contractors, site investigation companies and statutory bodies such as Inland Fisheries, OPW or TII.
Assist with the preparation of tenders and specifications for various engineering contracts for renewable energy projects.
Civil Engineering Design
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (e.g. electrical, mechanical, environmental, planning)
Design and detailing of civil and structural engineering elements of renewable energy projects to Eurocodes, including road design, drainage design, geotechnical design, foundation design and other related infrastructure.
Design and detailing of substation buildings, compounds and equipment plinths to meet ESB, EirGrid and Building Regulation requirements.
Perform desktop studies of proposed and existing wind farm, solar farm, battery storage and substation projects.
Support with the preparation of civil engineering, site layout and route survey drawings by the CAD team.
Complete site assessments, feasibility studies, and geotechnical evaluations.
Proficiency with AutoCAD is desirable, and experience with Civil 3D, Revit, Autotrack, QGIS and Infraworks would be beneficial but not essential.
Regulations
Perform the Designer, Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) and Principal Designer (PD) roles under the Irish and UK construction regulations.
Provide support to the wider team in relation to health and safety and quality documentation, including carrying out design risk assessments and on-site risk assessments and site audits.
Prepare construction, environmental and safety method statements and risk assessments.
Manage Building Regulations submissions on behalf of clients and/or oversee Building Regs compliance by contractors.
Industry Knowledge
Build and maintain knowledge of industry activity, relevant legislation and regulations applicable to the role and how they apply to the renewable and sustainable energy projects in relevant jurisdictions.
Actively participate in CPD courses and industry events.
Engagement with industry contractors, designers, and equipment suppliers to ensure awareness of best-in-class industry offerings and opportunities for additional efficiencies for Clients or potential cost savings.
Company Development
Endeavour to always maintaining strong client relationships.
Manage, in conjunction with the Civil Engineering Director, the civil engineering team.
Work with Civil Engineering Director to develop and grow the civil engineering team through business development, preparing tenders, attending industry events, etc.
Line manage and mentor members of staff.
At all times consider Danu's reputation in the wider industry by acting with integrity and professionalism.
Input positively and constructively to Danu project team meetings with the aim of continuously improving Danu's performance and delivery to clients.
Train, support and develop junior staff and other members of the team.
Assist with business development and broaden the company client base and workstreams.
Assist with developing company systems.
Person Requirements
Educated to degree level (minimum Level 8) in civil engineering (essential).
Chartered membership of a professional body (essential).
Minimum 10 years' experience in civil engineering roles (essential).
Civil engineering experience of renewable energy or related civil engineering infrastructure projects such as substations, roads, underground cables (essential).
Technical expertise in groundworks, foundations, drainage and road construction.
Good understanding of planning, building, environmental and health and safety regulations.
Ability to lead civil engineering workstreams, budget, manage deliverables and schedule team workload.
A keen interest in renewable energy and sustainability is desirable.
Strong communication and reporting skills.
Experience in client facing consultancy roles.
Ability to guide, support, train and develop junior staff.
Safe Pass and manual handling training.
Knowledge of Irish/UK/EU standards and codes.
Able to work from our Dublin office.
Flexibility in relation to traveling and working on sites across Ireland.
Legally entitled to work in Ireland.
Hold a current driving licence (essential).
