EligibilityApplicants must be 21 years or older and in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for at least one year, or 18 years or older for certain disadvantaged groups. Eligibility will be verified by the Department.Job DescriptionDutiesAssist with day‑to‑day activities of the service, focusing on client interactions.Provide practical support for older people attending the centre, including making teas, coffees, snacks, helping with laundry, shopping, prescription collection, and meal delivery.Offer one‑to‑one support to older people who drop in and benefit from dedicated time, and also provide such support through home and hospital visits.Help set up and participate in a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, gardening, exercise classes, flower arranging, music, yoga, baking, pottery, computer classes, information sessions, and games.Encourage older people to suggest additional activities they would like to see at the centre.Accompany older people on outings and away days.Plan and manage the weekly Mervue lunch club with staff and volunteers.Promote and encourage participation in activities at the centre and in other community settings.Ensure clients are fully informed about events taking place.Health & SafetyTake reasonable care for personal and others’ safety, health and welfare.Use protective equipment, clothing or other means for safety.Report any workplace defects that may lead to danger without delay to management.Adhere to Health and Safety policy and procedures as outlined in the COPE Galway Health and Safety Manual.Carry out health and safety duties specifically allocated to the role.Qualifications & AttributesFriendly, welcoming, patient, kind.Genuine interest in creating an age‑friendly environment where older people feel valued and cared for.Reliable and of good character with a demonstrated commitment to supporting older people to live independently.Previous experience working with or supporting older people in the community is desirable.Willingness to undergo training and acquire qualifications to progress to a full‑time position upon completion of the scheme.For further information please contact the Community Employment Supervisor, Damian Cunniffe, at damian.cunniffe@gretb.ie or 0876352678.
