Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Automation & Packaging
We’re partnering with an innovative engineering business to hire a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of advanced automation and packaging machinery. This role focuses on delivering high-performance equipment from concept through to build, testing, and handover.
The Role
Lead the end-to-end mechanical design of bespoke automated systems and packaging machinery
Create 3D models, detailed drawings, and bills of materials using modern CAD tools
Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (controls, electrical, production, and project delivery)
Drive design reviews, ensuring quality, performance, and compliance
Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing to optimise cost and build efficiency
Support full project lifecycle including testing and commissioning phases
Ensure adherence to relevant safety and regulatory standards
Conduct risk assessments and contribute to continuous design improvement
Mentor junior engineers and support team development
What We’re Looking For
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Significant experience in mechanical design within automation or special-purpose machinery
Strong background in high-speed mechanisms and complex equipment design
Advanced CAD skills (e.g. SolidWorks or similar)
Solid understanding of mechanical systems (drives, pneumatics, motion control)
Knowledge of machinery safety standards and compliance frameworks
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Confident communicator, comfortable working across teams and stakeholders
Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers
Willingness to travel occasionally for project support
Desirable
Experience in regulated industries (e.g. pharma or medical devices)
Exposure to validation and testing processes
Knowledge of robotics, vision systems, or advanced automation
Familiarity with design-for-manufacture and continuous improvement principles
Experience with simulation or analysis tools (e.g. FEA)
