Description
Purpose of the Post
The staff nurse will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to the highest professional and ethical standards within the model of nursing care practiced in that care setting.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* The staff nurse will Practice Nursing according to:
* the Professional Code of Practice as laid down by the Nursing Board (An Bord Altranais)
* Professional Clinical Guidelines
* All national and regional Health Service Executive guidelines (HSE guidelines).
* local policies, protocols and guidelines
* current legislation
* Implement the care philosophy, objectives and goals of their unit/department/organisation to deliver appropriate high quality service user care.
* Follow appropriate lines of authority within the Nurse Management structure.
* Participate as an inter-disciplinary team member in all aspects of service user care.
* Demonstrate a high degree of motivation and assume responsibility for their own professional development and contribute to the development of others
* Promote good interpersonal relationships with service users, their family/social network supports and the interdisciplinary care team in accordance with ethical standards.
* Demonstrate flexibility by assisting in other areas of the hospital as required
* Participate in regular performance review with their line manager, identifying key performance objectives and appropriate plans/measures to achieve areas for improvement and appropriate plans/measures to achieve them in a supportive environment.
* Respect and maintain the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the service user and in relation to all hospital activities.
* Professional Expectations
The nurse must comply with the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing Board (An Bord Altranais). The nursing profession demands a high standard of professional behaviour from its members and each registered nurse is accountable for his or her practice. The nurse must work within his/her scope of practice and must take measures to develop and maintain the competence necessary for professional practice. The nurse must be aware of ethical policies and procedures which pertain to his or her area of practice. Service users’ confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised service user care within the agreed nursing model.
2. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in the co-ordination and delivery of service user care.
3. Be an advocate for the individual service user and for his/her family.
4. Ensure that care is carried out in an empathetic and ethical manner and that the dignity of the service user is given proper consideration.
5. Collaborate with the service user, their family, the inter-disciplinary team and the Discharge Co-Ordinator to facilitate appropriate discharge planning and continuity of care.
6. Maintain appropriate and accurate written records and reports regarding service user care in accordance with local guidelines and within current legislative requirements.
7. Ensure that current legal requirements for the safe administration and storage of medicines are adhered to in accordance with best practice
8. Participate in innovation and change in the approach to service user care delivery, and contribute to service planning process, based on best practice and under the direction of nursing management, particularly in relation to new research findings and advances in treatment.
9. Have a sound knowledge of clinical standards and participate in patient/client care audits.
10. Participate in the setting of professional standards. Understand and co-operate with the need to measure and audit the effectiveness of care given in order to provide quality care.
11. Participate in research programmes and understand the need for evidence-based practice.

ADMINISTRATION /MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
* Manage the nursing care of service users within the operating theatres
* Take management responsibility for the ward/Unit when required.
* Delegate where appropriate to members of the care team
* Maintain effective interpersonal relationships with service users, visitors and colleagues.
* Communicate as appropriate with all staff and participate in theatre meetings.
* Manage the resources provided in an effective and economic manner.
* Co-operate in the rostering of nursing and support staff ensuring appropriate skill mix and optimum use of nursing resources.
* Liaise with Bed Management for effective utilisation of beds for the smooth and efficient running of the service.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety and risk management procedures and participate in their development, to comply with the statutory obligations, in conjunction with relevant staff.
* Accurately record and report all complaints to appropriate personnel according to local service policy.
EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develop teaching skills and participate in the planning and implementation of orientation and teaching programmes for all nurses, health care staff and students.
* Act as a Mentor, Preceptor or clinical assessor for staff and support staff in the clinical arena.
* Provide feedback to the Clinical Nurse Manager with regard to compilation of proficiency assessments for students in the clinical setting.
* Contribute to the identification of training needs pertinent to the clinical area.
* Identify and contribute to the continual enhancement of learning opportunities in the clinical area.
* Participate in the clinical/workplace induction of all new nursing and support staff.
* Develop leadership ability in order to act as an effective role model.
* Take responsibility for own learning and development needs and actively contribute to the learning and development of the interdisciplinary team.
* Provide education and information to service user/family as required

Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications and/ or Experience
Candidates must, on the latest date for receiving completed application be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by An Bord Altranais or be entitled to be so registered.
And
Have the clinical and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character
Age
Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age.
Post Specific Requirements
Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in the area of General Acute Medicine as relevant to the role.
* Have at least six months recent full time post registration experience in peri-operative/ theatre nursing.
Other Requirements Specific to the Post
The post holder must be available to day shifts, including Bank Holidays, and weekends.
